Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Terriers fall in overtime heartbreaker at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second time this season the Wofford men's basketball team and UNCG had to go to extra time to decide the game, this time with the Spartans edging out the Terriers 83-79 in overtime at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The Terriers were efficient from the floor, shooting 46.7 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from the 3-point line, hauling in 36 rebounds as a team. UNCG was just 29.2 percent from 3-point range, but 44.3 percent from the floor, scoring 16 points on the fast break. Nathan Hoover led all scorers with 25 points, while Chevez Goodwin (15), Tray Hollowell (13) and Trevor Stumpe (12) all reached double figures.

"They fought their tails off," said Wofford head coach Jay McAuley of his Terriers. "They deserved to win the game. There were a couple of bad breaks. Some we controlled some were out of our control, but credit to UNCG, they made some really tough buckets in overtime."

Wofford now sits at 16-12 overall, falling to 8-7 in Southern Conference play, with UNCG improving to 22-6 (12-3 SoCon).

Utilizing the full-court press, UNCG would jump in front 10-5, but Wofford answered with a 10-2 run which forced a timeout from the Spartans. UNCG climbed back, taking a 21-20 lead around the nine-minute mark.

Moments later, Murphy found Messiah Jones for a three-point play as Goodwin and Hoover pushed the lead to four with 3:44 remaining in the first. Hoover knocked down a 3-pointer and fed Stumpe for a trey that would send Wofford into the break leading by one (34-33).

Hoover remained in rhythm to start the second, knocking down a three and scoring in the paint as Wofford took a 43-38 lead. With UNCG cutting into the lead, Goodwin scored a hook shot and a pair of three throws to keep the Terriers in front with 12 minutes to play.

UNCG rallied to tie the game at 59-59 with 3:52 left in the second half, before Goodwin scrambled to grab a loose ball, called a timeout and put the Terriers ahead by two on the ensuing inbounds play. With 28.9 seconds to play, Isaiah Miller, the SoCon's leading scorer, went up-and-under to tie the game to send the teams to overtime.

Wofford would win the opening tip of overtime, but the teams had to replay the jump ball, with UNCG winning and taking advantage by scoring a pair of buckets to start the period.

"Tough one," McAuley said. "We win the tip, you think you got a possession and they freeze it and go back to the tip. It was an interesting situation but I couldn't be more proud of our guys' effort and their fight."

Hoover got to the line and hit a pair of free throws, but Miller answered twice to make the score 69-63. Stumpe would knock down a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to three, but Kyrin Galloway answered with a three of his own the next trip down the court. Both Hollowell and Hoover knocked down threes to keep Wofford in the game, but UNCG ultimately closed out the contest from the free throw line down the stretch, taking the 83-79 win.

"My idea, is we get back on that bus, we get home, we get back to work and find a way to go get that one on Saturday," said McAuley.

The Terriers travel to Furman on Saturday for a matchup with the Paladins at noon.
