Greenville, SC – Wofford's women's basketball team dropped a battle against Furman at the Timmons Arena on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 62-56. The loss brings both teams to an 8-6 record in conference, but due to tiebreakers, Furman takes over the 4 and Wofford drops to the 5.
After a few minutes of scoreless play,
Lawren Cook was sent to the line and converted both free-throws to put the Terriers on the board.
Da'Ja Green followed that up with a three that spun and rattled its way in to make it a five-point game at the media timeout. Out of the timeout,
Cairo Booker was able to sink two free-throws and make it a one-possession game.
Niyah Lutz added a floating layup with just over 2:00 remaining as Wofford tried to create some momentum, but the 1
st quarter ended with the squad down four.
Lilly Hatton started the 2
nd quarter with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with the assist coming from
Da'Ja Green. Hatton made a layup on the next possession and another three on the next as Wofford took their first lead of the game, 20-19. Green was sent to the line for three and she made all of them to re-take the lead for the Terriers with 4:57 to go in the first half. Furman ended the half with a 10 point lead after an 11-0 run, as Wofford trailed 33-23.
After a strong message at halftime by coach Garrity, the team responded right away as
Da'Ja Green knocked down a three from
Cairo Booker. Booker scored herself as she drove the paint and laid in a floater. Booker added to her assist total as she fed
Alexis Tomlin for the lay in, and
Da'Ja Green added a jumper as Wofford was within one during their 9-0 run. The Paladins scored a few as it was a four-point game at the 3
rd quarter media, 38-34.
Lawren Cook put the Terriers back in action as she grabbed an offensive rebound and made the put-back to kame the score 41-36. After a few questionable calls and a 6-0 run by Furman, the Terriers were down 47-36 going into the final frame.
Da'Ja Green was able to bank in a 3-pointer to start the 4
th quarter to bring it back to a 10 point game.
Cairo Booker added a trey of her own from Green and then Booker had a steal and score to force Furman into a timeout with 7:01 to go, all part of an 8-0 run. Green added to the run after she made a contested jumper with the shot clock winding down. Wofford continued to run the floor as
Cairo Booker found
Lawren Cook all alone for the easy layup which tied the game 49-49. Green sank a trey with just under a minute to go, followed by Booker's three which brought the score to 56-55 with 21.5 seconds left. With the game coming down to the free-throw line, Furman stayed efficient late and converted when they needed to as the Terriers fell, 62-56.
Da'Ja Green led all players with 23 points, going 7-11 from the field and 5-7 from three point land.
Lilly Hatton led the Terriers with eight rebounds and also contributed eight points.
Cairo Booker was in double-digits scoring as well as she put up 14.
"We knew it was going to be a fight from the very start. We played hard, gritty basketball, but just got nudged at the end", said
Jimmy Garrity. "I'm just so proud of the togetherness and the dedication of this team, even when their down, they are never out of it. As far as next week goes, we will plan and prepare just like any other game, and it will take our best effort to win."
Wofford will play Furman one more time in the first round of the SoCon tournament on Thursday, March 5
th with tipoff scheduled at approximately 1:15 p.m.
