CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford women's soccer team could not overcome Chattanooga's flurry of shots, falling 1-0 at the UTC Sports Complex Sunday afternoon. Though the sides entered halftime scoreless, Wofford was unable to get off a shot in the first half while being outpaced by the Mocs' 11. Grace Klippenstein broke the tie in the 52
nd minute with her top left corner score, and the Chattanooga defense held firm despite Wofford's late attempts to draw level, hanging on for the victory.
Chattanooga controlled the first half, opening the contest on the attack by firing their first shot in the 4
th minute, but it was blocked. The Mocs put a shot on goal in the 6
th minute, but
Caroline Doss made the save. Chattanooga missed high in the 9
th minute and then left in the 18
th and 20
th minutes. The Mocs again missed wide in the 26
th minute. Chattanooga continued their onslaught of off-target shots with misses in the 36
th and 38
th minutes. A 41
st minute shot was wide again before the Mocs found an on-target look, but
Caroline Doss again made the save in the 43
rd minute. Chattanooga made one last attempt to break through before halftime, but
Caroline Doss scooped up the save in the 45
th minute to preserve the scoreless tie at the break. Wofford could not break through at all on the attack as the Terriers were unable to get off a single shot attempt, while the Mocs tallied 11 in the first half.
Wofford's attack found some traction out of halftime when
Rachel Rasins opened the half with a shot in the 46
th minute that was saved. The Chattanooga high-pressure attack continued as well with an off target shot in the 48
th minute.
Kylie Rincon shot in the 50
th minute, but she missed wide. Chattanooga found the back of the net at the 51:22 mark to strike first when Grace Klippenstein put the ball in the top left corner.
Olivia Hughes put on a shot off a corner kick in the 57
th minute, but it missed high. The Mocs responded with a pair of shots in the 62
nd minute, but neither could connect. Chattanooga's 64
th minute shot was on target, but it was saved. In the 67
th minute,
Lexi Reichenbach tried to slot it home in the lower right corner, but it was saved.
Leanna Guion had a look in the 71
st minute, but her shot sailed wide. The Mocs attempted a header in the 74
th minute, but it missed right. They attempted a shot off a volley in the 78
th minute, but it was not a clean shot and rolled out wide.
Savannah Vathy attempted a long shot in the 80
th minute, but it was saved. Chattanooga missed on a shot attempt in the 82
nd minute. A minute later, a yellow card was given to the Wofford bench, but the Terriers continued their comeback attempt with an off target shot off the foot of
Ashley Grant in the 84
th minute. A minute later she attempted to shoot again, but it was blocked. Grant again tried to pull the Terriers level in the 87
th minute with a shot to the lower left of the goal, but it was saved. Wofford could not get another desperation shot off, sealing the 1-0 defeat.
Wofford (3-11-0, 1-4-0) totaled nine shots in the contest, all in the second half. Chattanooga (5-8-2, 2-3-1) tallied 19 shots in the match. The squads were even with three corners each.
Caroline Doss (0-4-0) picked up four saves in net for the Terriers. Abbey Saddler (4-8-2) also had four saves for the Mocs.
The Terriers will return home to Snyder Field on Friday, October 15 when they host UNC Greensboro. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
