Men’s Soccer Falls Short in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team concluded its five-game road slate with a hard 90 minutes at Dorrance Field Tuesday night, but the North Carolina Tar Heels held on for the shutout victory. Tega Ikoba headed home the match's only goal in the 24th minute. Though Joshua Old made multiple clutch saves between the pipes, including a penalty kick in the 40th minute, the Terriers couldn't find much traction on the attack and fell to a 1-0 defeat.

North Carolina opened with an early shot that sailed high within the first minute of play. Wofford had a chance in the 7th minute, but Brandon Oddy's one-on-one shot with the keeper was saved. North Carolina then put on four shots in five minutes, but none of them connected. Mitchell Myers had a go in the 10th minute but also missed. The sides traded shots in the 17th and 18th minutes, but to no avail. The Tar Heels put on a wide shot in the 21st minute before finally breaking through in the 24th minute when Tega Ikoba scored with a diving header off a cross. He attempted another shot 30 seconds later, but it was saved. The Tar Heels continued to hold the momentum when Amin Mohammedi received a yellow card in the 26th minute, leading to another shot that missed high. North Carolina continued the offensive pressure with a 32nd minute shot that missed, and then the Terriers received another yellow card under a minute later, this time on Alex Dennis. A costly foul in the box set up a North Carolina penalty in the 40th minute, but Joshua Old came through with a diving save to keep it a one goal game.

North Carolina opened the second half with another early shot, missing wide in the 47th minute. Ikoba tried for the brace in the 51st minute, but Joshua Old made the save. The Tar Heels had chances in the 54th and 56th minutes, but they hit the crossbar and were blocked, respectively. North Carolina continued their offensive pressure with a 59th minute longshot that sailed high. The Terriers finally got their first shot attempt of the second half in the 64th minute when a rebound found Eduardo Velazco in the box, but his shot was saved. A North Carolina foul in the 67th minute set up a free kick for Wofford, but Meade Fowler's shot off the cross missed wide. North Carolina had a breakaway opportunity to find an insurance goal in the 75th minute, but Joshua Old again came up with a clutch save. With Wofford beginning to up its offensive pressure, Riley Thomas was booked for a yellow card in the 79th minute after a hard slide tackle. The ensuing Terrier attack was cut short by an offside call a minute later. Looking for insurance, the Tar Heels attempted a header in the 82nd minute that rolled out wide. A corner kick in the 86th minute gave North Carolina an opportunity to add to their lead, but Joshua Old again made the save to keep the Terriers in range. Wofford, however, would not be able to fire another shot, and North Carolina held on to the 1-0 triumph.

Wofford (3-7-1, 1-1-1) only tallied five shots in the match while North Carolina (7-4-1, 2-3-0) totaled a staggering 22 shots. The Tar Heels also held the advantage in corners, 6-1.
