Wofford Men’s Soccer Drops Heated Rivalry Contest to Furman

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team relented two goals in the second half, falling short to the Furman Paladins 3-1 at Snyder Field Saturday night. Furman took an early lead thanks to a Wofford own goal in the 3rd minute. The Terriers drew level when Brandon Oddy slotted the equalizer home in the 16th minute. Furman took control in the second half, however, as Jacob Garzon scored from outside the box in the 54th minute. Jake Raine's 74th minute goal sealed the 3-1 victory for the Paladins.

Furman secured an early lead off the first corner kick of the game. After the kick was crossed into the box, it deflected off a Terrier and into the net for the early 1-0 Paladin lead. Mitchell Myers tried to bring Wofford level with shots in the 6th and 15th minutes, but they were saved and wide, respectively. The Terriers found the equalizer in the 16th minute when Mitchell Myers headed the ball to Brandon Oddy, who slotted it home into the bottom left corner. The Furman bench then received a yellow card in the 22nd minute for dissenting. Magnus Kjoller almost put Wofford ahead in the 27th minute, but his attempt to go just under the crossbar was parried away. Furman was assessed another yellow card in the 35th minute, and Wofford's subsequent shot attempt a minute later was saved. Magnus Kjoller tried again in the 36th minute, but his shot banged off the post, and the squads entered halftime level.

The second half saw the intensity between the rivals rise. Both squads received yellow cards in the 50th minute, including Mitchell Myers for Wofford. This did not stop him from shooting a minute later, but he missed wide. Furman pulled ahead in the 54th minute when Jacob Garzon shot from just outside the box and found the top right corner of the net. The squads then exchanged yellow cards again with bookings in the 58th minute (Furman's Dylan Lane) and in the 60th minute (Wofford's Christoffer Saietz). The bookings escalated a minute later when a red card was shown to a member of the Wofford bench for dissent. Not to be deterred, Mitchell Myers tried to pull the Terriers level in the 62nd minute, but his shot was blocked. Eduardo Velasco was the next recipient of a yellow card in the 68th minute. With Furman firmly in control of the momentum, the Paladins added an insurance goal in the 74th minute when Jake Raine received a cross in the box. With the keeper being pulled right, Raine slotted the ball to the left and into the goal for a 3-1 advantage. Now in desperation mode, the Terriers fired off two saved shots, and then Brandon Oddy was booked for a yellow card in the 80th minute. Nic Parker tried to score under the crossbar in the 83rd minute, but Ben Roberts made a stellar save for the Paladins. Eduardo Velasco gave one final go for the Terriers in the 87th minute, but it was another Paladin save to seal Wofford's fate.

Wofford (3-8-1, 1-2-1) posted 13 shots, eight of which were on goal, while Furman (3-7-1, 2-2-0) only sent five shots, three on goal. The Terriers also held the corner kick advantage, 10-2. Joshua Old (3-7-1) only tallied one save in net for the Terriers. Ben Roberts (3-7-1) totaled seven saves minding the Paladin net. The sides combined for 45 total fouls in the match, with Furman posting 23 to Wofford's 22. There were 10 total bookings as well – five yellow cards for the Paladins and four yellow cards plus a red card for the Terriers.

Wofford will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at Snyder Field. Kickoff against High Point will be at 7:00 pm, and the contest will serve as Senior Night for the Terriers.
