GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team suffered a shutout defeat at UNCG Soccer Stadium Saturday night. The Spartans opened the scoring early with a goal in the 10
th minute. They added a second in the 33
rd minute. UNCG's third goal in the 73
rd minute secured the 3-0 victory for the Spartans.
UNCG opened the game on the offensive, firing the match's first four shots, the last of which put the Spartans on the board. In the 10
th minute, Daniel Mangarov had a short distance one-on-one chance with Wofford's keeper,
Joshua Old. Going left, Mangarov sent the ball to the right, slotting it home for the early lead. The Terriers tried to pull level with their first two shots, but both were blocked. UNCG had a chance at an insurance goal in the 29
th minute, but it missed wide. However, the Spartans found that goal in the 33
rd minute off the foot of Basile Marc. JC Ngando delivered the assist.
Mitchell Myers immediately responded with a shot in the 34
th minutes, but it was wide.
Thaddeus Dennis attempted to get the Terriers on the board in the 40
th minute, but his shot was saved. Wofford entered halftime down, 2-0.
UNCG mirrored their first half, opening with four-straight shots, but none of them connected. The Spartans then received a yellow card in the 57
th minute to halt their momentum. Now with a chance, the Terriers attempted to go on the attack.
Mitchell Myers sent a shot in the 59
th minute that was blocked.
Jackson Wrobel got the rebound and sent a shot himself, but it was again blocked. UNCG got their next opportunity via a corner kick in the 70
th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar. The Spartans received their second yellow card in the 73
rd minute, but it did not deter their attack. A minute later, Theo Collomb slotted it home into the bottom right of the net to put UNCG up, 3-0.
Wofford (4-9-1, 1-3-1) only had six shots in the match compared to 16 for UNCG (11-3-1, 4-1-0). The Spartans held a slight corner kick advantage, 7-6.
Joshua Old totaled three saves for the Terriers. Niclas Wild only tallied one save for the Spartans, but he picked up the clean sheet.
Wofford will return home to Snyder Field for their regular season finale on Saturday, Oct. 30. Kickoff against the Mercer Bears is slated for 7:00 pm.
