Wofford Men’s Soccer Can’t Overcome Early Belmont Goal, Fall 1-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Wofford College men's soccer team could not overcome an early deficit on the road against the Belmont Bruins, falling 1-0. Belmont capitalized on a foul, converting a crossed free kick into a header goal in the 17th minute. Wofford would see some chances to comeback, but nothing could connect as the Belmont defense remained steadfast to seal a shutout victory.

Neither side could get a good chance to start the match, the first shot coming 13 minutes in off the foot of Belmont's Liam O'Brien, but it was saved. Alexis Dennis was called for a costly foul in the 17th minute, and on the ensuing free kick the Bruins struck first. Niccolo Dagnoni crossed the free kick into the box where Case Cox headed it home. Belmont took another shot a few minutes later, but it was blocked. Wofford finally fired their first shot in the 20th minute when Mitchell Myers missed wide. The sides traded shots in the 21st and 22nd minutes, but neither could connect. Mitchell Myers fired another shot in the 34th minute, but it was off target. The Bruins responded with a blocked shot a minute later. In the 36th minute, Magnus Kjoller was booked for a yellow card. This did not hold him back, however, as he fired a shot in the 41st minute that was saved. Mitchel Myers took another shot in the 43rd minute, but it was blocked, and the Terriers entered halftime down 1-0.

Belmont's Kyle Barks received a yellow card in the 54th minute, but the Terriers could not capitalize. Rather, the Bruins went on the attack, firing shots in the 56th and 61st minutes that were off target and blocked, respectively. Charlie Harris put on a blocked shot in the 64th minute, and Mitchell Myers had a shot saved in the 66th minute. After another failed Belmont shot, Wofford continued their attempts to draw level, but the Belmont defense would not relent. Charlie Harris and Mitchell Myers again shot in succession in the 71st and 73rd minutes, respectively, but to no avail. Harris then earned a yellow card in the 76th minute and put on a saved shot in the 78th minute. Brandon Oddy then tried his best to draw the Terriers level, but his two shots in the 86th and 88th minutes could not connect. Mitchell Myers gave one final go for the Terriers in the 90th minute, but the Bruins blocked it to prevent a potential Terrier comeback.

Wofford (3-6-1, 1-1-1) had 14 shots on the night while Belmont (8-3-1, 3-1-0) sent 10 shots. The Terriers also held an advantage in corner kicks, 4-3. Joshua Old (3-5-1) tallied three saves for the Terriers while the Bruin goalkeeper, Drew Romig (8-3-0), totaled five saves in net.

The Terriers will conclude their five-game road slate on Tuesday, October 12 when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. Kickoff against the UNC Tar Heels is set for 7:00 pm.
