SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team was defeated 35-10 by Chattanooga on a cool and windy Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. After a scoreless first quarter, the Mocs took control of the game and held the Terriers offense to only 136 total offensive yards in the contest.
Wofford is 1-8 overall and 0-7 in the Southern Conference. Chattanooga is 6-3 overall and 5-1 in league play. The Terriers were led by
Kyle Pinnix and
David Legette with 36 rushing yards each. Chattanooga was led by Ailym Ford with 98 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Cole Copeland was 14-of-20 for 200 passing yards and he added a rushing touchdown.
"We made some defensive stop in the fourth quarter which showed that we were not giving up," said Wofford head coach
Josh Conklin. "We got better on defense today. It wasn't perfect, but we got better so that was encouraging to see. We are excited to go down to The Citadel next weekend which will be our final conference opponent this year. I am proud of their fight. Down to our fourth quarterback, I thought

The Terriers began the game with the ball at the two-yard line. After going three-and-out and punting, the Mocs faced a fourth-and-one and were short on the run to turn the ball over on downs at the 36-yard line. Wofford went three-and-out and punted. The Mocs gained one first down before punting back to the Terriers with 6:46 left in the first quarter. Wofford had three first downs before having to punt. With the ball back, the Mocs had a 30-yard completion to move across midfield. After three more first downs, they scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper by Cole Copeland for a 7-0 lead at the 13:06 mark of the second quarter. Wofford then went three-and-out and punted.
Chattanooga had two first downs to move to midfield on the ensuing drive. After another first down, Ailym Ford went 27-yard up the middle for the touchdown and a 14-0 lead at the 7:59 mark of the second quarter. The Terriers went three-and-out and punted. After the Mocs had one first down, Cole Copeland found Chris James for a 44-yard touchdown pass and a 21-0 advantage with 4:29 left in the first half. With the ball back,
David Legette had a rushing first down to move to midfield and
Irvin Mulligan added a first down. Faced with a fourth-and-one at the 22-yard line,
Jamari Broussard picked up the first down with a two-yard carry. As time expired,
Walker Gliarmis made a 43-yard field goal to make it a 21-3 game at the half.
The Mocs had the ball to open the second half and had one first down before punting. Wofford went three-and-out on their first drive of the half and the Mocs took over at midfield. After a pair of first downs, an eight-yard touchdown run by Tyrell Price pushed the lead to 28-3 at 5:33 in the third quarter. On a short kickoff,
James Wells made the catch and returned it 73-yards for a touchdown. The score was 28-10 with 5:20 on the clock in the quarter. The Mocs responded with a seven play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a 13-yard touchdown run by Gino Appleberry to make it a 35-10 game at 2:39 in the third quarter.
After Wofford had one first down, they had to punt. The Mocs had a pair of first downs before a fourth-and-one run was stopped and the Terriers took over at midfield.
Jamari Broussard had a first down run, but the drive ended on a fourth-and-eight run that failed to gain the needed yardage. Chattanooga had a first down run and then a 30-yard first down run. A fourth-and-three pass was broken up by
Rett Russell and Wofford took over on downs. The Terriers had one first down before the game ended.
Wofford had 136 total yards, with 127 rushing yards. Chattanooga had 470 total yards, with 270 of those rushing yards. Chattanooga had a 25 to nine advantage in first downs. Wofford was 4-of-13 on third down and 1-for-2 on fourth down. Chattanooga was 6-of-11 on third down and was 0-of-3 on fourth down. Wofford was called for four penalties to three for Chattanooga. The Mocs had a 33:46 to 26:14 time of possession advantage.

The Terriers lead the all-time series against Chattanooga 15-13. The Mocs have won consecutive games in the series for the first time since the 2013, 2014 and 2015 seasons.
Over ten Wofford players were held out of the game due to the flu, which included five starters. Offensive lineman Cecil Fischer left the game in the third quarter after a helmet-to-helmet hit. He was transported to Spartanburg Medical Center for further evaluation but did have full movement.
The game marked the final regular season home contest for 26 Wofford seniors. The group includes seven fifth year seniors:

The 73-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by
James Wells in the third quarter was the first touchdown of his career. It was the first time Wofford returned a kickoff for a touchdown since March 27, 2021, against VMI.
Wofford was held to under 200 yards of offense for the first time since December 9, 2017 in the FCS Playoffs at North Dakota State (177 yards).
