Women’s Basketball Stumbles at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team could not keep its newfound winning streak alive in Littlejohn Coliseum Friday night. Clemson started the game well, and the early deficit proved too much for the Terriers as they succumbed to the Tigers, 84-49.

Wofford falls to 4-7 on the season, while Clemson improves to 6-4.

Wofford shot just 23.4 percent from the field, while Clemson shot 48.5 percent. The Terriers hit 31.8 percent from distance, but in a surprising twist, the Tigers held the advantage beyond the arc, too. Clemson entered the contest shooting just 20.5 percent from three, but on Friday night, the Tigers were able to knock down 42.9 percent. The size of Clemson also gave the Terriers fits, as the bigger Tigers outrebounded Wofford 52-34. This contributed to 22 second chance points for Clemson, compared to only nine for Wofford. Clemson scored 16 seconds into the game and never looked back, as the Tigers led for 39:44 and never trailed.

Jackie Carman led the Terriers in scoring for a fifth consecutive game, posting 10 points in the affair. Her three assists also topped the squad. Lilly Hatton pulled the most boards with six, also contributing seven points. Annabelle Schultz tallied nine points, all of which came via the three-ball. Niyah Lutz and Reagan Rapert added six points and three rebounds each. Alexis Tomlin totaled five boards, and Alea Harris made her return to the court with two assists in six minutes off the bench.

Clemson started the scoring early, hitting a jumper just 16 seconds into the tilt. The Tigers found another jumper, a triple and a layup to get off to a 9-0 run to begin the game. Jackie Carman got the Terriers on the board a little over two minutes into the affair, and Lilly Hatton followed with a layup. However, the Tigers went on another run, this time with eight-straight points to go up by 13. Annabelle Schultz drilled a three-pointer to keep Wofford within range. A couple of Tiger free throws followed by an Abbey Crawford jumper wound up offsetting, and then the Tigers got a layup. Alexis Tomlin hit a free throw, but Clemson ended the quarter by hitting a three to lead 24-10.

The Tigers didn't relent, scoring back-to-back jumpers to begin the second frame. Wofford seemed to pick up some momentum when Jackie Carman hit a jumper, and Reagan Rapert tacked on a trey. The Tigers responded with a triple of their own, but then Carman drained one to keep pace. A Clemson layup and three-pointer extended the lead to 18, but Annabelle Schultz sunk a three to cut into it. The Tigers hit a jumper, and Helen Matthews scored a layup, but Clemson continued its hot hand beyond the arc with another triple. Lilly Hatton put home a layup before halftime, but the Terriers entered the break down 42-25.

Clemson knocked down two-straight triples to begin the second half. Niyah Lutz was able to offset one by drawing a foul on a jumper to get a three-point play. Clemson kept up the pressure, hitting a layup, and though Lilly Hatton hit a free throw, the Tigers knocked down a three. The Tigers got four more points before Jackie Carman hit a pair of free throws. A Tiger layup preceded an Abbey Crawford jumper. Sydnee Richetto then swished four-straight free throws to give the Terriers a run. It did not last, as Clemson ended the quarter with the next four points to stay up 63-38.

The Tigers secured the first four points of the fourth quarter. Reagan Rapert and Niyah Lutz each drained threes as Wofford refused to show any quit. The Tigers, however, went on a 12-point run than ended when Annabelle Schultz splashed her third three of the contest. The Tigers and Terriers traded points before Clemson put in a layup in the closing seconds to seal the game. Wofford lost 84-49.

The Terriers return home to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Monday, Dec. 20 for a matchup with the Northern Kentucky Norse. Tipoff is set for 6:00 pm.
