SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team blew past Brevard College, as the Terriers drubbed the Tornados 101-37 Wednesday night at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
Wofford improves to 3-6 with the triumph. Since the game was officially an exhibition for Brevard as a Division III program, the Tornados remain at 6-3 on the season, 2-0 in the USA South.
The Terriers posted 100 points for the second time this season (106 vs. Southern Wesleyan, Nov. 19). This marks the first season since 2018-19 in which Wofford scored triple-digits in multiple games, doing so four times in that campaign.
The Terriers were in complete control all night long, shooting 54.9 percent to Brevard's 26.3 percent. Beyond the arc, the Terriers enjoyed their best performance thus far, shooting a season-best 61.1 percent, while holding the Tornados to just 9.5 percent from three. Wofford secured 38 rebounds to Brevard's 26. The Terriers forced 31 turnovers on the night, which contributed to 47 points off turnovers and 25 fast break points, both new season-highs. Wofford also dominated the paint with 42 points, and the Terriers dished 24 assists to tie their season-best. Scoring nine seconds in, the Terriers led for a new season-best 39:51, never trailing.
"We had a tough loss this past weekend at Coastal, so just to come out and just be in a good headspace leading into this weekend at App [State] is really important for us," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "I was really proud of the way we shared the ball. We had 24 assists to 39 makes – that was really good. We talked beforehand that we wanted our assists to be in the 20s, so to reach that goal was really good. We turned the ball over, and it got a little bit sloppy on occasion, but overall, I'm really happy that everybody contributed. Everybody played a lot of minutes. I think they had fun out there, too. That is all important when you're playing a long season like we have."
Five Terriers scored in double-figures:
Jackie Carman and
Sydnee Richetto tied for the team lead with 18 points each,
Niyah Lutz and
Helen Matthews each tallied 14 and
Abbey Crawford posted 12. This is the third-straight game in which Carman has at least tied for the team lead in scoring. Crawford's 12 points are a career-high as well as the first double-digit performance of the sophomore's career.
Ja'Rae Smith also scored a new career-high with seven points. Smith also dished four assists to tie for the team lead with Matthews and Carman. Matthews set a new season-high with her 14 points, and her career-high eight boards topped the squad.
Alexis Tomlin was near the top per usual with six rebounds. Crawford added five boards herself to set another career-best. Nine of the 10 Terriers to play scored, as
Lilly Hatton posted nine points,
Reagan Rapert added seven and Tomlin had two to round out the scoring.
"I love it," said Garrity of the stellar performances from the underclassmen. "Everyday in practice, they work really hard, and you'd like to see that lead into gamedays, playing well and scoring the ball and doing what you do to your craft the best that you can. So for those guys that had their career-highs – Syd, she had that one at the end, I thought she was going to get it there. Helen almost had a double-double, too. So it was really just overall a good team effort, and we're feeling really good about ourselves."
"It feels good. Definitely a step-up from last year, I had some struggles. But it's all individual, and it doesn't really matter to me," said senior guard
Jackie Carman of her performance. "I'm happy to get this win with the team. And we're going into some tough games, so it's good to have some confidence as a team as well."
Lilly Hatton won the opening tip and immediately found
Alexis Tomlin in the paint, who scored the game's first points nine seconds in. The Terriers would not look back.
Jackie Carman hit a jumper, and
Reagan Rapert drilled a three to give Wofford the first seven points of the ballgame. It took just over two minutes for Brevard to put home a layup and get on the board.
Niyah Lutz then drained a three before
Helen Matthews scored back-to-back layups.
Abbey Crawford scored a layup before Brevard hit a jumper. The rest of the quarter was all Wofford, as Matthews scored a layup. Lutz hit a jumper, followed by a Carman layup that drew a foul. She converted the and-one free throw, Lutz added a triple and Carman posted another layup to give the Terriers a whopping 28-4 lead after the first quarter.
The second quarter did not begin much better for the Tornados, with
Helen Matthews scoring a layup followed by an
Abbey Crawford jumper.
Sydnee Richetto then converted a three-point play after a foul to round out the scoring run. The Tornados added a pair of free throws, and Wofford got back to it with layups from Crawford and
Lilly Hatton. Brevard found some life with back-to-back three-pointers, but Wofford responded with a pair of threes as well from
Jackie Carman and
Niyah Lutz. Brevard added a free throw, and Matthews put in a layup. Hatton finished the half by draining a three, giving Wofford a 50-13 halftime advantage.
Reagan Rapert opened the second half with a pair of free throws, and then she immediately stole the ball right back and swished a layup. Brevard added its own layup before
Niyah Lutz drained yet another triple. The Tornados added a layup, and the squads traded jumpers.
Ja'Rae Smith hit a free throw followed by Brevard securing a layup. The teams then traded a pair of free throws, and then they traded layups.
Jackie Carman then added a layup, drawing the foul for a three-point play. The Tornados added a layup, but Smith scored one of her own before
Sydnee Richetto drilled a triple to end the third quarter. Wofford led 72-27.
Sydnee Richetto and
Helen Matthews each drained a pair of free throws at the beginning of the fourth quarter before Brevard scored a layup. Richetto then swished a triple and a jumper. Brevard got another layup, but
Abbey Crawford hit a jumper followed by another Richetto trey. The Tornados scored a layup before another Wofford run.
Jackie Carman drained a jumper, and
Lilly Hatton's layup brought the Terriers to 90 points. Crawford and
Ja'Rae Smith hit layups before Carman drilled a three. Richetto's jumper brought the Terriers to 99 points, and Matthews put Wofford in triple-digits with her layup. Brevard scored the final points with two layups, but the game was long-gone. Wofford won handedly, 101-37.
"The main thing that we preach is togetherness," said Carman. "And just to get everyone involved, everyone's confidence goes up. And it just gives a great feeling going into a really important game."
The Terriers hit the road for back-to-back games, first traveling to Boone, N.C. to face Appalachian State on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2:00 pm. Wofford then returns to the Palmetto State to face Clemson at Littlejohn Coliseum on Friday, Dec. 17 at 7:00 pm.
