Bertsch Notches Career-High, Samford Pulls Away for Series Sweep

Bertsch and Smith lead the way with 11 and 10 kills, respectively

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Alexa Bertsch tallied a career-high 11 kills to lead the Terriers, followed by Kennedy Smith with a season-high 10 kills, though, Samford would manage to pull away in straight sets to earn the series sweep over Wofford, 28-26, 25-15, 25-22.

The loss drops the Terriers to 2-2 in the SoCon, while Samford moves to 5-1 in-conference.

Bertsch, a native of Lake Worth, Fla., accounted for a team-high 12.0 points, adding a block and three digs, while Smith notched a season-high on a solid .409 hitting percentage to pair with a block as well on the night.

Senior Riley Coonan put together an impressive night offensively, recording a .429 hitting percentage on eight kills and two blocks, followed by freshmen Sarah Barham and Millie Loehr with four and three kills, respectively. First-year Emily Hodsdon recorded 31 assists on the day, seeing an ace and a kill, as classmate Abbey Richman totaled a team-high 10 digs.

Despite the loss, the Terriers honed in on the attack in Monday's match, finishing with a season-high .263 hitting percentage, though, Samford would weather all of Wofford's blows to hold steady for a .353 hitting percentage of its own for the night.

Samford was also effective in its serve for the series, notching nine service aces in tonight's match after recording 12 on Sunday to help carry the Bulldogs to the sweep.

After trailing early on, Alexa Bertsch would come alive in the first set, nailing three-straight points to give Wofford its first lead, 8-7. Emily Hodsdon served up an ace to follow, as both teams traded points up until a Samford 4-0 run forced a Wofford timeout up 19-15. Points from Bertsch and Loehr, on a kill and solo block, ensued before Bertsch connected on another swing to deadlock to the score at 20-20. Bertsch tallied seven kills in the set, as kills by Kennedy Smith and Millie Loehr then reached set-point for the Terriers at 24-23. A Wofford service error squandered the advantage, as the Terriers would notch set-points two more times before Samford capitalized on an ace to secure its final point, 28-26.

The Terriers continued to come out on the attack, jumping out with a 9-6 lead after a kill from Kennedy Smith and ace from Meghan Yaffa. Samford then rallied to reclaim a 12-10 lead before hitting its stride with a dominant 6-0 run that was capped by a Bulldogs attack error to make for an 18-13 margin. Despite another Samford error, the Bulldogs proceeded to rattle off five straight prior to Smith recording a kill on set-point, though, Samford's McQuirter finished things off again for the Bulldogs, 25-15.

The Bulldogs kept healthy leads throughout the third set, extending a 15-11 spread by the media timeout. Wofford competed with resilience, tying the match five times within the set, as Riley Coonan dialed home a kill that sparked a 4-0 run to knot the match up at 16-16. Sarah Barham then rocketed home a kill, before Bertsch added her 11th point of the night to equalize the set for the fifth time at 20-20. A kill from Smith kept the margin within one, as back-to-back errors kept Wofford alive on set-point at 24-22. However, Samford's Lauren Deaton would slot her game-high 16th kill to seal the deal at 25-22 and conclude the match in straight sets.

Wofford (2-2, 2-2 SoCon) returns back to the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, hosting league-leading ETSU (4-0, 4-0 SoCon) for its next SoCon series on February 21-22. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21, followed by a 5 p.m. matchup on Monday, Feb. 22.
