SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team scored eight runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 9-0 win over Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. After scoring once in the first inning, the Terriers scored eight runs on three hits and a pair of errors in the fourth frame to secure the win.
Wofford is 2-1 to begin the season and Gardner-Webb is 1-2, as the Terriers won the three-game weekend series.
Lawson Hill,
Nolen Hester and
Brennen Dorighi each had two hits for the Terriers, while
Jack Renwick scored two runs. The pitching staff of
Elliot Carney,
Dom Marcoccio and
Zach Byron combined for the shutout with three hits allowed and ten strikeouts.
The Runnin' Bulldogs opened the game with a double, but the runner was stranded at third base.
Jack Renwick began the bottom of the first with a double and he stole third. A double by
Lawson Hill gave Wofford a 1-0 lead.
Elliot Carney struck out the side in the top of the second inning.
Nolen Hester led off the bottom of the second with a single.
Brennen Dorighi hit a double, but Hester was out at home on the play. Wofford had runners on the corners with two outs before a ground out ended the inning.
In the third inning, Gardner-Webb stranded one runner and Wofford was retired in order. After the Runnin' Bulldogs went in order in the top of the fourth,
Nolen Hester walked with one out in the bottom of the frame. A single by
Brennen Dorighi through the right side went all the way to the wall on a fielding error, allowing Hester to score and make it a 2-0 lead. A single by
Zeb Roos added a run and with the bases loaded a fielder's choice by
Jack Renwick added a run for a 4-0 score. A walk to
Lawson Hill loaded the bases again and a walk by
John Dempsey plated a run. A single by Nolen added two more runs for a 9-0 lead at the end of the fourth inning.
Both teams left one runner on base in the fifth inning. After Gardner-Webb was retired in order in the top of the sixth inning, Wofford left one on base in the bottom half. Both teams went in order in the seventh inning and the Runnin' Bulldogs went in order in the top of the eighth. After Wofford left the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, Gardner-Webb was retired in order to end the game in the top of the ninth.
Wofford starter
Elliot Carney (1-0) did not allow a run in five innings and had six strikeouts.
Dom Marcoccio went three innings without allowing a hit and four strikeouts in his first career appearance.
Zach Byron did not allow a hit in the ninth inning in his first action.
Casey Young (0-1) started for Gardner-Webb and went 3.1 innings with four runs allowed on five hits, along with one strikeout. Dalton Strickland allowed two runs, Corey Treyes gave up two runs in a third of an inning, and Connor Gleason allowed one run on one hit in a third of an inning. Bobby Alcock went three innings without allowing a hit and striking out five. Tyler Harrison threw the eighth inning with one hit allowed.
Wofford will visit Presbyterian College on Wednesday afternoon before hosting Xavier for a four-game series beginning on Friday afternoon.
