Women's Lacrosse Falls in Season Opener at Gardner-Webb

Furnari, Ralph and Wulff net first goals of the season for the Terriers

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Three Terriers net their first goals of the season in Monday's season opener at Gardner-Webb (1-0), though, the Runnin' Bulldogs would come away with a 19-6 victory to hand Wofford its first loss of the season.
 
Junior Shannon Wulff and sophomore Olivia Abé led the Terriers with three points apiece on the day, as Wulff matched a career-best with two goals and an assist, while Abé dished two assists along with her ninth career goal in the match. Abé also grabbed two ground balls on the day.
 
Junior Elisabeth Ralph tallied her first two goals of the year, in addition to recording three ground balls, as classmate Ally Furnari rounds out the scoring for the Terriers with a goal.
 
Sophomore Leah Hurley added an assist to couple with three ground balls on the day, followed by senior Hannah Wurzel with two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Junior Emma Seif also grabbed two ground balls and caused a turnover.
 
Despite the loss, Kelsey Thompson recorded 10 saves in the match.
 
Gardner-Webb got things going from the very start, tallying its first seven points within the opening six minutes prior to Shannon Wulff putting Wofford on the board in the 18th minute, 7-1. Ralph would answer with her first goal of the year after a Runnin' Bulldogs score, as Olivia Abé then dished to Shannon Wulff to find the back of the net for a 10-3 margin with 12 minutes left in the half.
 
The Terriers started to find their rhythm, as Wulff then returned the favor in assisting Olivia Abé for her first goal of the year with 4:40 to play in the period, followed by an Ally Furnari score on a free-position shot, as Wofford trailed at the intermission, 12-5.
 
After an early second-half goal from Gardner-Webb, Leah Hurley would find Elisabeth Ralph for her second goal of the day to answer in the 20th minute, 14-6. However, Gardner-Webb managed to continue its relentless attack in controlling the rest of the match to pull away by the final horn, 19-6.
 
Next, Wofford (0-1) returns to action with its home opener against Presbyterian, scheduled for 3 p.m. start on Friday, February 26, at Gibbs Stadium.
