HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team began their season Wednesday night with a 2-1 loss to the High Point Panthers. Despite having a shots advantage and control of play for most of the match, they were unable to come out on top.
Wofford fired away early as
Buster Sjoberg had an attempt towards goal just over a minute in, but it never tested the keeper.
Adrian Roseth took aim next and his shot just narrowly missed the top corner, sailing out for a goal kick. High Point made it 1-0 against the run of play with a through ball that sent MD Myers in on goal and he waited out
Joshua Old to slide it in.
Brandon Oddy tried to get it back quickly, but it was saved by the Panthers' keeper. Myers made it 2-0 in the 36
th minute as that rounded out the action for the 1
st half.
A very chippy affair turned into Wofford having a penalty kick just after halftime. Oddy stepped up in the 52
nd minute and went for the bottom right corner, but goalkeeper Holden Trent made the save and gobbled up the rebound before Oddy could tap it home. Roseth then had a crack from 25 yards out, but Trent made the save once again. Roseth found a bit of fortune in the 74
th minute as his scissor-kick attempt hit the post and went right to
Eduardo Velazco who slammed it into the back of the net to give the Terriers some life. Roseth had one more swing at it moments later, but wasn't as fortunate as it rolled to the keeper.
Wofford out-shot High Point 13-9 with Roseth having a game-high five shots. There was a total of 41 fouls in the match, 24 going to the Terriers and 17 going the Panthers way.
Wofford steps back out on the pitch on Saturday, February 27 against South Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
