CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Wofford volleyball team dug deep over the final two sets to see itself climb back from a 2-1 deficit and edge the Catamounts in five sets, 17-25, 28-26, 18-25, 25-16, 19-17, at the Ramsey Regional Activity Center on Wednesday night. The Terriers were met with a plethora of career-best performances in the five-set clash, though, freshman
Sarah Barham emerged as a bright spot for Wofford on the evening, accounting for 19.5 points in the match with career-highs of 14 kills, seven blocks (four solo) and six digs.
Â
The victory moves the Terriers to 5-2 in the Southern Conference, as Western Carolina drops to 3-4 in-conference and 3-6 overall.
Â
Barham hit .387 for the contest, with just two errors, as sophomore
Bella Zeman followed with a team-high 17 kills, career-high seven digs and one block. Senior
Riley Coonan was solid with added 11 kills, five blocks and three digs as the
SoCon offensive player of the week.
Â
Fresh off SoCon setter of the week honors,
Emily Hodsdon paced the Terriers with her fourth career double-double, recording a career and match-high 55 assists and 11 digs to pair with a career-best five kills on 10 swings (.500) and no errors.
Meghan Yaffa tallied a season-high 12 kills to couple with five digs, while first-yearÂ
Millie Loehr also provided solid contributions with eight kills and four blocks on the night.
Â
Freshman
Abbey Richman turned in a career-best performance at libero, collecting a career and match-high 32 digs, while notching career-highs with two service aces and five assists.
Sophomore
Chasidy Sharpe also contributed two service aces in the match, as senior
Emily Durham and first-year
Kaitlyn Brown tallied 14 and eight digs on defense, respectively.
Â
After splitting the first three sets, the Terriers regained their composure in the fourth, using a 3-0 run that saw a
Bella Zeman kill and
Emily Hodsdon ace fuel a 12-9 advantage that forced a Catamounts timeout. Kills from
Sarah Barham and
Riley Coonan paced a seven-point lead before the Catamounts responded to force a Wofford timeout at 19-14.
Â
Wofford came out the timeout focused, as an
Abbey Richman ace, followed by a pair of kills from Zeman and WCU attack error set up set-point.
Millie Loehr then sealed the deal to push the contest to a fifth set, 25-16.
Â
The Catamounts came out hungry, hopping out to a 9-5 lead before a WCU service ace forced Wofford to revisit the game plan at 10-5. WCU extended a 13-8 margin, though, a
Sarah Barham swing would be the catalyst for the Terriers, following up with another big kill before assisting a block with
Millie Loehr to cap a 3-0 run and force a Catamounts timeout at 13-11.
Â
Barham returned with her heroics on another point, as Coonan would notch the following two equalizers on a block and kill prior to
Kennedy Smith rattling WCU into a bad set on serve for the 17-16 advantage late. Wofford was met with a Catamounts block before another Coonan swing from
Emily Hodsdon forced a timeout at match-point, 18-17. Freshman
Abbey Richman would then put the nail in the coffin, coming out of the timeout to land her second ace of the night to grant the Terriers the five-set victory at 19-17.
Â
Next, Wofford (5-2, 5-2 SoCon) returns back to Spartanburg to host The Citadel at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for its next conference series on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. and Monday, March 1, at 5 p.m.
