SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore
Bella Zeman tallied a career-high 22 kills to lead the Terriers' attack on Monday evening, as Wofford would come away with its first SoCon series sweep of the season over Chattanooga in five sets, 3-2, at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The win for the Terriers also marked head coach
Lynze Roos' 250th win for her career.Â
Â
Â
After claiming the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-22, the Mocs responded with resilience to nab the next two sets, 25-14 and 25-21, prior to a close battle in the fifth that saw the Terriers survive 15-12.
Â
Zeman accounted for a match-high 22.0 points, as
Riley Coonan added a season-high 12 kills, six digs and three blocks in another solid performance for Wofford. Sophomore outside hitter
Kennedy Smith recorded eight kills and two service aces, while setting three assists and corralling 14 digs.
Â
Freshman
Sarah Barham accounted for 10.0 points, recording a career-high nine kills on a .412 hitting percentage, along with two blocks and a career-best five digs, while
Millie Loehr finished with six kills and a career-high four blocks on the night.
Â
Freshman
Emily Hodsdon set a career and match-high 49 assists in the match to couple with a new career-best 17 digs for her second consecutive double-double, followed by classmate
Abbey Richman with a career-best 20 digs and three assists. Senior
Emily Durham recorded 15 digs, while
Meghan Yaffa finished with 14 digs and a service ace.
Â
Wofford opened the match holding steady leads, jumping out to a 11-7 lead after a Coonan kill and Chattanooga attack error.
Emily Hodsdon would then set up
Kennedy Smith for a kill, followed by a Smith service ace on the next serve, sparking a monster 6-0 run that saw two kills from Coonan prior to Zeman rocketing a kill to force a Mocs timeout up 17-8. Chattanooga clawed its way back with a 6-0 run of its own out of the timeout before Zeman recorded a kill that broke Wofford's silence, 18-14. Zeman continued to pace the Terriers, as late errors plagued the Mocs in leading them to drop the first set, 25-20.
Â
Chattanooga kept things tight to start in the second set before another Zeman kill set up a 5-0 spurt that was capped by a block from
Millie Loehr and
Sarah Barham, folllowed by another block from Loehr and
Kennedy Smith, to push a 13-9 Wofford lead. Kills from UTC's Gylian Finch and Coniah Davis made for a two-point spread (14-12) before a Loehr kill and
Abbey Richman service ace briefly extended a four-point cushion, 16-12. Errors would prove costly for the Mocs again, tallying seven in the frame, as Chattanooga closed in late, 24-22, though, a Maia Rackel failed attack would conclude the set in Wofford's favor, 25-22.
Â
On the brink of a 3-0 sweep, the Mocs began to put their foot down, recording a .361 hitting percentage on 16 kills in the set to pick up the momentum. Chattanooga hopped to a 12-8 lead after a MacKenzie Saitta kill that set up a 4-0 run to bust a 16-8 advantage. The Mocs wouldn't loosen their grip in holding seven to eight-point margins going forward, as the two teams traded kills before a Chattanooga block would set up the Mocs final two kills to take the set, 25-14.
Â
Wofford came out the gates spirited, as a kill from
Riley Coonan opened a brief 7-3 lead, though, the Mocs would rally to knot the score at 7 before deadlocking the score three more times to see a 12-12 mark. An attack error and bad set gave Chattanooga the lead, capitalizing on the cushion to extend a 20-16 margin. Kills from Barham, Smith and Zeman cut the deifict to two, 23-21, though, Chattanooga's Rackel took matters into her own hands with back-to-back kills to knot the match up at 2-2 with the 25-21 set victory.
Â
The fifth set would be extremely competitive, seeing Wofford hold a 6-2 lead on a pair of bad sets and a Coonan kill before the Mocs stormed back with a 4-0 run out of a timeout to tie the score up, 6-6. Zeman reclaimed the advantage for Wofford, while freshman
Kaitlyn Brown provided solid contributions holding serve for the Terriers in setting up a brief 4-0 run that saw kills from
Sarah Barham and Zeman (11-6). Kills from Barham pushed match point at 14-10, though, consecutive blocks from Chattanooga made for a 14-12 spread to force a Wofford timeout. The freshman connection from
Emily Hodsdon to
Millie Loehr then finished things off, as Loehr recorded the final kill to propel Wofford past Chattanooga in the final set, 15-12.
Â
The Terriers return back to action on Sunday, Feb. 14, when Wofford travels to Birmingham, Ala. to face Samford for a 5 p.m. (ET) match, followed by a consecutive matchup with the Bulldogs on Monday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m (ET).
