Volleyball Adds Fifth Straight, Drop Bulldogs in Four Sets

Three Terriers record double-digit kills, Yaffa notches double-double

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's volleyball team grinded out its fifth consecutive win in four sets on Monday evening, bouncing back from a first set deficit to move to 7-2 in the Southern Conference with a 3-1 victory over The Citadel (3-10, 1-7 SoCon), 21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-22.

The Terriers received solid contributions across the board, as freshman Sarah Barham led the way with 12 kills and six blocks (four solo) to register 17.0 points on the night. Barham, a native of Summerfield, N.C., leads the SoCon in hitting percentage (.401), as the first-year hit .370 for the match with just two errors on 27 swings.

Sophomore Meghan Yaffa recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 kills and 14 digs, in addition to a block and service ace, while senior Riley Coonan finished with 10 kills, two blocks and two digs.

Freshman Millie Loehr, added six kills and five blocks, as classmate Emily Hodsdon continues to pace the Wofford attack with a match-high 42 assists while also recording seven digs, two kills and two aces. Hodsdon currently ranks third among the SoCon in assists, averaging 10.51 per set.

Senior Emily Durham connected on a career-best five kills to pair with seven digs and an ace and block apiece, as freshman libero Abbey Richman tallied 14 digs, two assists and an ace. Senior Robyn Krause rounds out the Terriers with a season-high eight digs and an ace in the match.

After a slow start that allowed The Citadel to come away in the first, 25-21, the Terriers rebounded in the second, finding their rhythm to go on and hit .360 in the set and knot the match at 1-1.

Emily Hodsdon got things going for Wofford on serve, as a slew of Bulldog attack errors set up consecutive kills for Riley Coonan and Meghan Yaffa, forcing a timeout at 11-6. Another Yaffa point and Emily Durham ace ensued while back-to-back kills from Yaffa and Sarah Barham then pushed a 17-10 margin. The Citadel would rally off four straight to force a Wofford timeout, at 17-14, though, kills from Barham and Millie Loehr, followed by a Coonan solo block, forced another Bulldogs timeout with Wofford up 21-16. Consecutive errors plagued The Citadel, with nine in the set, as a Coonan kill that set up set-point was followed by yet another attack error from The Citadel's Mellanie King to conclude the set at 25-18.

Wofford found its groove early on in the third set, jumping out to a 10-5 lead before points from Barham, Millie Loehr and Coonan pushed a 14-6 advantage. Another Coonan kill extended a 16-10 spread, as a Barham swing and assisted block with Loehr kept a 20-14 cushion late. The Citadel closed in coming out of a timeout, 21-17, though, Barham put the Terriers back on serve with another kill, as an Emily Durham solo block and Coonan kill from Emily Hodsdon ended the third in Wofford's favor, 25-18.

The Citadel began to buckle down in the fourth set, closing in early on to eventually deadlock the match at 16-16 after a Gina Delancey block on a Barham swing. A Delancey ball-handling error would then set up back-to-back kills from Millie Loehr and Riley Cooonan to regain a 19-16 edge, as the Bulldogs swiftly erased the deficit again to tie it up at 20-20. Both teams exchanged points up until a costly service error by The Citadel's Mellanie King set up match-point for the Terriers. The freshmen tandem of Sarah Barham and Millie Loehr would then refuse a Sharlissa de Jesus swing at the net to conclude the set at 25-22 and finish the match off, 3-1.

Next, Wofford (7-2, 7-2 SoCon) will travel to Macon, Ga. for its next SoCon series with the Mercer Bears on Sunday, March 7-8. The Terriers will open the series with a 3 p.m. match on Sunday, Mar. 7, followed by a 6 p.m. tilt on Monday, Mar. 8, at Hawkins Arena.
