SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team began a weekend series with a 13-3 win over Toledo on Friday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored at least two runs in each of the first five innings to take a 13-1 lead and the Rockets plated two runs in the ninth inning for the final tally.
Wofford is 8-5 to begin the season, while Toledo is now 1-9 overall. The Terriers had nine hits to seven for the Rockets, with Wofford taking advantage of ten walks and timely hitting to drive in the season-high 13 runs.
NOTABLES
- Colin Davis led the Terriers with three hits and three RBIs, while Lawson Hill added two hits and two runs scored.
- Wofford starting pitcher Hayes Heinecke (2-2) earned the win by going five innings with one run allowed on four hits, along with three strikeouts. Owen Parliament had four strikeouts in two innings and Jack Galbraith went the final two frames with one hit allowed.
- Toledo starter Connor Brandon (0-1) went 1.2 innings and allowed six runs on five hits. Sam Servello, Jason Young, Kyle Pijaszek and Jack Olberding combined to finish the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Rockets had a pair of hits in the top of the first inning. Lawson Hill singled to lead off the bottom of the first and Nolen Hester walked. A double by John Dempsey drove in both runners for a 2-0 advantage. Dempsey moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Trey Yunger to make it 3-0 at the end of the first frame.
- In the second inning, Wofford had a double by Brennen Dorighi and a walk by Zeb Roos, with runners advancing on a sacrifice bunt. A single by Lawson Hill drove in a run and a sacrifice bunt by Nolen Hester added a run. Colin Davis added an RBI double for a 6-0 lead.
- Toledo got one run on the board in the top of the third inning with a single, double and ground out. The Terriers answered with a run by Jack Renwick on a wild pitch and then a single by Matty Brown scored Zeb Roos, who was hit by a pitch to reach base to make it an 8-1 game.
- After the Rockets left two runners on base in the top of the fourth inning, Trey Yunger doubled to score a pair of runs after Colin Davis singled and John Dempsey walked. Yunger stole third and a scored on a throwing error on the play for an 11-1 advantage.
- Wofford had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth with walks by Brennen Dorighi and Matty Brown, along with Lawson Hill being hit by a pitch. A double by Colin Davis with two outs pushed the lead to 13-1.
- In the top of the ninth inning, the Rockets plated a pair of runs for the final 13-3 margin.
