GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women's tennis team began Southern Conference play on Saturday afternoon, facing off against the UNCG Spartans and coming away with a 5-2 win. The Terriers are now 8-3 (1-0 SoCon) on the season.
Wofford fell behind early in doubles play as
Liz Massie and
Emely Kahrs were defeated 6-3, but the team of
Brittney Wilbur and
Georgia Fischer brought it back level with a 6-4 win as the third pairing. The Terriers were unable to win the doubles point however, as
Jenna Vroman and
Lilie Steryous fell 7-5.
Kahrs came back at the #5 singles position with a clean 6-0, 6-0 win, and Fischer continued her dominance with a 6-0, 6-1 victory of her own. Vroman was able to bounce back from her doubles defeat with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the top spot, and Wilbur is still a force at the #6 spot, winning 6-3, 6-3. As Wofford clinched the match, Steryous clinched a win in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, to give her team the fifth and final point.
"I'm so proud of how we competed today. We didn't let the doubles loss get to us and we played extremely well in singles", said coach
Krissy Hall. "It's so important to get that first conference win and we're excited to play next week."
