SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford's women's tennis team played a heartfelt match against the #33 Furman Paladins, ultimately losing 6-1. Wofford goes to 8-4 (1-1 SoCon) on the season, while Furman holds a steady 13-6 (2-0 SoCon) mark.
The Terriers had an initial good start to doubles play as
Liz Massie and
Georgia Fischer took a 1-0 advantage, and
Jenna Vroman and
Lilie Steryous were only down 2-1 to the #27 ranked pairing in the nation in Furman's Kozarov and Adams. Those two pairings for Wofford would fall, but the third duo of
Brittney Wilbur and
Kay Kluska won the final doubles match 6-1.
Singles competition for Wofford was just as tough as doubles going up against the #33 team in the country. The Terriers were downed in straight sets in five out of the six matches. Vroman put up a good first set against #15 Kozarov before falling 6-4, 6-1, and Massie also fell by that same score line on court #3. Wilbur fought hard but was defeated 6-4, 6-3, but Steryous won her second set 6-1, that took her match to a super tiebreaker. She battled against Furman's Dillon, and won the tiebreaker to prevent the sweep and give her team the final point of the afternoon.
"Furman's a great team and that's why they are nationally ranked. I thought we played some good matches and won some good points against very tough competition", said coach
Krissy Hall. "We need to keep our energy high after we win points and can't give up multiple points in a row. We will make adjustments and get ready to play another one next week."
