SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Sunday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 9-6 by Toledo at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers held a 6-4 lead after six innings, but the Rockets had five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-6 advantage.
Wofford is 10-6 to begin the season, while Toledo is now 2-11 overall. The Terriers won the first three games of the weekend series, securing the series win. The Rockets had 13 hits in the game to five for the Terriers.
NOTABLES
- Zeb Roos had two of the five hits for the Terriers, while Lawson Hill scored twice after reaching on walks. Marcus Strothers led the Rockets with two hits and three RBIs.
- Wofford starting pitcher Elliot Carney worked five innings with four runs allowed and six strikeouts. Matthew Marchal (0-1) went 1.2 innings with five runs allowed on six hits. Devon Sharts threw the final 2.1 innings without allowing a hit.
- Toledo starter Chris Myers allowed two runs in 2.1 innings on three walks. Layne Schnitz-Paxton (1-0) went 5.2 innings with four runs allowed and seven strikeouts. Cal McAninch earned the save with a clean inning in the ninth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers scored in the bottom of the first inning when after a pair of walks a ground out by John Dempsey plated a run.
- Wofford made it 2-0 in the second inning when Jack Renwick walked, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Zeb Roos.
- In the top of the third the Rockets led off with a single and with two outs a RBI single cut the lead to 2-1.
- The Rockets led off the fourth with a single and followed with a home run by Marcus Strothers for a 3-2 advantage. They left a runner on third base after a triple.
- Wofford was able to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth when Trey Yunger had an infield single and stole second base. A single by Brennen Dorighi along with a throwing error on the play allowed Yunger to score to make it 3-3.
- Toledo added a run in the top of the fifth when a runner was on second after a walk and stolen base. An RBI single gave the Rockets a 4-3 advantage.
- Lawson Hill led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk. On a wild pitch he advanced to third base and scored on a throwing error to third base to tie the game at 4-4. Colin Davis walked and John Dempsey added a double. A ground out by Trey Yunger drove in Davis and then Dempsey scored on a wild pitch for a 6-4 lead.
- Three doubles by the Rockets in the top of the seventh inning tied the game at 6-6 with one out. After a fly ball a single plated a run for a 7-6 score. A single and a walk loaded the bases for a single that drove in two runs to make it 9-6. A ground out with the bases loaded sent the game to the seventh inning stretch.
- In the top of the eighth, the Rockets had a runner on third with two outs when Zeb Roos made a catch on the fence to end the half.
- Wofford loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth on two walks and a single by Zeb Roos. A double play ended the scoring chance for the Terriers.
- Both teams were retired in order in the ninth to close the game.
