CHARLESTON, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team posted a 6-0 shutout win over The Citadel at Riley Park. The Terriers pitching staff combined to allow just three hits over nine innings and only twice did the Bulldogs have a runner in scoring position. Wofford's offense was led by
Colin Davis with a pair of home runs and three RBIs.
Wofford is 12-7 to begin the season, while The Citadel is now 8-9 overall. It was the opening SoCon series for both teams, with the Terriers 2-1 in the standings with the series win. The teams will meet again for a three-game series in Spartanburg on May 7 and 9.
NOTABLES
- Colin Davis had his first career game with two home runs and was 3-of-5 from the plate. He has three home runs this season and 27 for his career.
- Wofford starting pitcher Elliot Carney (2-2) did not allow a run in seven innings, with two hits and eight strikeouts. Zach Byron faced three batters and had one strikeout in an inning. Luke Stephens made his collegiate debut and allowed one hit in the ninth.
- The combined shutout was the second of the season for the Terriers (9-0 vs. Gardner-Webb on February 21). It was the first shutout of a league opponent since a 10-0 win over ETSU in 2016.
- The Citadel starter Lathan Todd (1-3) gave up four runs on four hits with eight strikeouts in six innings. Chace Cooper, Simon Graf and Gant Starling went the final three frames with two runs allowed and two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wofford was retired in order in the top of the first inning. The Citadel led off with a double but left two on base at the end of the first.
- Both teams were retired in order in the second inning. Brennen Dorighi walked to begin the third inning and moved to second on a failed pick-off attempt. With two outs, a single by Lawson Hill drove in Dorighi for a 1-0 lead.
- Colin Davis opened the fourth inning with a solo home run for a 2-0 advantage.
- In the top of the sixth inning with one out, Brennen Dorighi singled and Colin Davis followed with a home run shot to left center to make it a 4-0 contest.
- One runner was left on base by both teams in the seventh inning.
- Trey Yunger was hit by a pitch to open the eighth inning, which was followed by a double by Colin Davis and a walk to John Dempsey. A Jack Renwick sacrifice fly brought in a run and a fielder's choice by Brennen Dorighi made it 6-0. Wofford left runners on the corners.
- In the ninth inning, Wofford left one runner on base after Lawson Hill reached on an error. The Citadel had a double with one out, only their third hit of the game, but stranded the runner on third.
