SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team was unfortunate to not come away with a win on Saturday night after controlling most of the game and out shooting the Bucs, falling 3-2. The teams combined for five goals, seven yellow cards, and three reds cards, in a very emotional contest.
The Terriers had the first chance of the game as
Daan Snellink put his boot through it and rattled the left post. Snellink had another chance that was blocked, but
Thaddeus Dennis picked up the rebound and fired it wide. Wofford kept up the pressure with
Adrian Roseth shooting one, but his attempt was also blocked. Wofford finally broke through in the 41
st minute with a set piece that was crossed in and it deflected off of a Buc defender and rolled into the back of the net. The lead didn't last long however, with ETSU coming back before the half ended and tying the game with 20 seconds to go in the opening half.
Both teams pushed for another goal early in the second half as both goalies had to come up with a save. ETSU took the lead in the 52
nd minute as Wofford turned it over and
Emil Larsen was only able to make the initial save, as the rebound was slotted into the net. The pace of play ramped up as the Bucs were sentenced three yellow cards in a row as the Terriers looked for the equalizer. Roseth was denied as his shot was palmed out for a corner.
Brandon Oddy had a chance along with Roseth again, but nothing would cross the goal line.
The intensity grew on as Wofford was shown the first red card of the game, given to Eduardo Velasco. Five minutes later, Oddy was shown a red as well as the Terriers began to lose their composure. ETSU scored on the resulting free kick making it a 3-1 game with six minutes left. Right after kickoff, the Bucs were handed a red card, and Roseth scored on his free kick which made the game more interesting. Wofford attacked for the final five minutes, but their final shot was saved as the Bucs were able to hold on.
