Baseball Rally Falls Short Against Davidson

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – On Tuesday evening, the Wofford College baseball team fell 7-6 to Davidson at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis. The Wildcats scored four runs in the third inning and had three runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead. Wofford rallied with five runs in the top of the eighth inning but were unable to plate the tying run.
 
Wofford is 14-10 overall, while Davidson is 13-9 overall. The two teams split the home-and-home midweek series, with the Terriers having taken the first game last Tuesday.
 
NOTABLES
  • Cameron Gill led the Terriers with three hits, while Colin Davis drove in two runs.
  • Wofford had ten hits to six for Davidson, however the Terriers left eleven runners on base to only three for the Wildcats.
  • The Terriers are now 4-2 in one run games this season.
  • The game was the 100th overall in the series between the two teams, with the Wildcats holding a 56-44 advantage.
  • Wofford started Sam Stratton, who went 2.1 innings with two runs allowed. Matthew Marchal allowed two runs on three hits. Dom Marcoccio worked an inning with two runs allowed. Dalton Rhadans went the final four innings with one run allowed on two hits and three strikeouts.
  • Davidson starter Will Schomberg threw 2.2 innings with five strikeouts and one hit allowed. Jacob Peaden (1-1) worked 1.2 innings with one run allowed, while Jacob Walker went 3.0 innings with two runs allowed on six hits. Bennett Flynn gave up one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Nolan Devos worked a clean ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams left one runner on base in the first inning. The Terriers stranded two in the top of the second inning and the Wildcats were retired in order.
  • In the third inning, Nolen Hester walked and with one out Colin Davis was hit by a pitch. Lawson Hill walked with two outs to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the top half.
  • Davidson had two runners on base when Ryan Wilson hit a home run for a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third. John Hosmer followed with a solo home run to make it 4-0.
  • Wofford loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning after Nolen Hester reached on an error, Colin David was hit by a pitch and John Dempsey walked with one out. Lawson Hill had an RBI single before a double play ended the top half with a 4-1 score.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Wildcats added three runs on two hits for a 7-1 advantage.
  • Wofford plated a run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Cameron Gill. Nolen Hester added an RBI single to cut the lead to 7-3. A double to right center by Colin Davis drove in two runs and an RBI single by John Dempsey made it a 7-6 game before a ground out left one runner on base.
  • After Davidson was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth, the Terriers went in order to end the game.

Wofford returns home for a three-game series against Western Carolina, with a single game on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
