Men’s Soccer Drops Nailbiter in Home Finale

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team wrapped up their home portion of the 2021 spring season with a devastating 1-0 loss to UNCG on senior night. This marks the team's sixth loss by a one goal margin, as they have been unfortunate to not get a result thus far.

Grant Wollam got the start in net for the Terriers as he saw action early with an opening minute shot from the Spartans that he watched go wide. Thaddeus Dennis had the first attempt for Wofford, but his shot also missed by a good margin. The Terriers won the first shot on net battle with Erik Nikolaisen having a go, but it was easily handled. Wollam was then tested in the 31st minute as he dove to his left to make the save. Both teams compiled two more shots on net before the half was over, but both goalkeepers stayed in shape as it was scoreless at the break.

Wollam had to be sharp to start the second half as UNCG put two shots towards the net, one of which Wollam had to palm out of play for a corner to keep the game even at 0-0. That wouldn't last for long however as UNCG tapped a loose ball under Wollam and it rolled 20 yards into the net to give them the lead. Wofford was quick to respond with Dennis taking a shot right from the restart, and Brandon Oddy also had a kick that was foiled. The Spartans tried to add on to their advantage, but Wollam came up large again with a pair of saves, giving the Terriers hope with 20 minutes to go. Wofford pressed the Spartans' defense for the remainder of the game, winning three corners in the final five minutes. Buster Sjoberg had one final kick with 10 seconds left, but it went over the net and the final whistle blew.
