Terriers Earn Point, Settle for Draw at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team played its penultimate match of the season Thursday night, taking on recently ranked #24 Furman as the teams played to a 0-0 draw. The Terriers score their first point of the season in a game that was back and forth with 24 combined shots, 33 total fouls, and 4 yellow cards.

Furman had early control of possession as five minutes in the Paladins sent in a cross and Wofford keeper Joshua Old came out to collect it before a purple jersey could make contact. Old had to come up with a true save moments prior as a Furman shot looked like it was going wide, but he took no chances and pushed it out for a corner. The Terriers developed a counter-attack on the Paladins, but Josh Mackie's shot was handled. Immediately following that, Adrian Roseth sent a header towards goal, but once again it went right into the gut of the goalkeeper. Furman would end up hitting the post in the 31st minute as the two squads remained scoreless. Furman controlled a majority of the rest of the half, but it would be a 0-0 score at the intermission.

The Terriers had an early chance to start the second half as Buster Sjoberg found himself at the top of the box with an open shot, but he sent it over the net. A minute later, Roseth had his second opportunity of the match as he cut on his right foot and took aim, only to be bobbled and held onto by the Furman goalie. After a Furman chance in which Old made a save, Alex Dennis put his left boot through one, but it curled wide of the post as the Terriers had the Paladins on their heels. As the half became more chippy, Furman tried to catch Old out of his net, but fortunately for the Wofford keeper the shot went over his head and out of play. The Terriers had a chance to take the lead in the 66th minute as Roseth won a freekick just outside of the 18-yard box. He tried surprising Furman by shooting it under the wall, but it didn't have enough pace to get into the net. Wofford had another chance in the 79th minute as the Dennis brothers connected inside the box, but Alex's shot flew over everybody and resulted in a goal kick. A very scrappy final 10 minutes saw both teams still scoreless as the game was taken to overtime.

Wofford had a slight chance midway through the first overtime period as Alex Dennis sent a through ball to Roseth, but Roseth couldn't get by the last defender for a shot opportunity as it was cleared away. Roseth did get away a shot with under two minutes left, but it was parried away and sent out for a corner as the teams prepared for double overtime. The Terriers had an early shot in the second overtime by Meade Fowler, but still nothing got past Furman's keeper. Furman attempted a long range effort in the final minute, but Old put his paws over it easily as the final whistle was blown.
