LEXINGTON, VA. – The Wofford men's soccer team finished their 2021 spring season with the most dramatic of finishes, a penalty kick goal by
Adrian Roseth in the 110
th minute to take the game away from VMI. A dominating performance from the Terriers as they outshot the Keydets 20-6, and had an astounding 13-2 corner kick advantage.
Wofford came out of the gates with high intensity winning a corner within the first three minutes of the game. Even though they didn't convert on it, they showed their intentions that they wanted to win their final game of the season.
Adrian Roseth had the first chance for either side as his shot was blocked and went out for a corner. Roseth was able to get one on target in the 32
nd minute, but it was handled by VMI's goalkeeper. Roseth had one more opportunity that was foiled before the Keydets took the lead just before halftime. Despite some frustration, Wofford was dominating the first half of gameplay as they went into the locker room trailing by one.
The Terriers began the second half looking for the equalizer as
Charlie Harris attempted one, but it went over the crossbar. Moments later, Roseth put his second shot on goal, but once again he was denied as it was pushed out for a corner.
Sam Friedrich had a chance from the corner, but his shot barely missed the post and went out for a goal kick. The Keydets were able to capitalize on Wofford's missed chances and scored a second in the 57
th minute to really give the Terriers some trouble. The two-goal lead didn't last long as Roseth finally got one to hit the back of the net in the 65
th minute to put some life back in his side. Just four minutes later, Wofford earned a corner and
Josh Mackie delivered a ball into
Jake Kwiatkowski who buried it to tie the game 2-2. VMI made substitutions to try and change the momentum, but that didn't stop Wofford as Harris thought he gave the Terriers the lead, but it was saved to keep the game even. With multiple shots and corners in the final 10 minutes, Wofford had to settle for overtime for its second straight game.
Wofford was able to get a corner a minute into the extra frame, and a following shot by Kwiatkowski sailed high and out of play. The Terriers kept pressuring the VMI defense, but another shot by Mackie didn't make it in as the teams headed to double overtime. VMI had their first chance of overtime, but it never threatened
Joshua Old in net. Just as the game was about to end in a tie, Wofford was given a penalty kick in the final minute of play.
Adrian Roseth stepped up and made no doubt about it and sent the Terriers into a frenzy as they completed the comeback and score their first win of the season.
