JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Wofford College baseball team opened a three-game weekend series against Jacksonville University with an 8-2 loss at John Sessions Stadium on Friday night. The Dolphins scored four runs in the third inning and added two runs each in the fourth and eighth, while allowing the Terriers just a pair of runs in the eighth inning.
Wofford is 7-3 to begin the season, while Jacksonville University is now 1-8 overall. The Dolphins had ten hits and the Terriers had nine hits in the contest.
NOTABLES
- Nolen Hester led the Terriers with three hits, while Trey Yunger added a pair of singles. The Dolphins were led offensively by Tommy Joseph with two hits and three RBIs.
- Wofford starting pitcher Hayes Heinecke (1-2) went six innings with six runs allowed (three earned) and four strikeouts. Zach Byron threw the final two frames with two runs allowed on three hits.
- Jacksonville starter Tyler Santana (1-2) threw seven scoreless innings with four hits and ten strikeouts. The Dolphins combined to strikeout 14 batters and did not issue a walk.
- Wofford's Andrew Calhoun hit a home run in the eighth inning, his second career hit in two at bats.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trey Yunger singled to lead off the game. The Dolphins had their first hit in the bottom of the second inning.
- In the bottom of the third, the Dolphins had two runners on base after singles and an RBI single with two outs made it 1-0. A fielding error allowed a run to score for a 2-0 game. A triple plated two runs to make it 4-0.
- The Dolphins loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth and drove in two runs on a single for a 6-0 advantage.
- The Terriers had a pair of singles in the top of the fifth inning from Nolen Hester and Zeb Roos.
- In the top of the seventh, Wofford had John Dempsey reach on an error and Nolen Hester singled, but both were stranded.
- Matty Brown singled and was drive home by a pinch-hit home run by Andrew Calhoun to make it a 6-2 game in the top of the eighth. Trey Yunger added a single but was unable to score.
- In the bottom of the eighth, the Dolphins led off with a double and with one out had an RBI single. A ground out with the bases loaded added a run for an 8-2 lead.
- Wofford left two runners on base in the top of the ninth inning.
