Terriers Make History in Come from Behind Win

BIRMINGHAM, AL. – The Wofford women's tennis team made history on Sunday afternoon as they defeated the Samford Bulldogs for the first time in program history. It wasn't easy for the Terriers as they fell early, but roared back with tremendous efforts in singles play to win the match 4-3 and send their victory total to double digits.

Wofford went down early after Samford took a clean sweep in doubles play. Jenna Vroman and Lilie Steryous was the quickest match of the three as they fell 6-1. The second pairing of Liz Massie and Ansley Hardeman were on the wrong side of a late 7-5 win for the Bulldogs, and Kay Kluska and Brittney Wilbur were upended 6-4.

The Terriers went down 2-0 in the match after a loss on court 5, but won the next two matches to even the score. Steryous had a pair of 6-2 victories at the #2 position, and Georgia Fischer won in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 on court #4. The final three matches all went to three sets with Wofford dropping the first set in each match. Vroman picked up a 7-5 win in her second set, but ultimately fell in the third. Wilbur lost her first on a tiebreaker, but won two straight, 6-4, 6-1, to level the match 3-3. Massie lost her first 7-5, then won the second set with a reverse score, and defeated her opponent with another 7-5 win after being down 4-5 and saving three match points to continue.

"I'm proud of how we hung in there and competed. It's tough to come back after almost a two week break, but it shows how much heart we have and the belief we have in each other", said coach Krissy Hall. "Brittney and Liz did great to come back after losing the first set and their comebacks gave us the strength to pull it out today."
