MACON, GA. – The Wofford women's tennis team won their second match in two days on Monday afternoon taking on the Mercer Bears. Just 24 hours prior where they defeated the Samford Bulldogs for the first time in program history, the Terriers won more convincingly with a 5-2 result over Mercer.
Wofford was off to a hot start after they won the doubles point on the road.
Jenna Vroman and
Lilie Steryous got the team started with a 6-1 win, while
Kay Kluska and
Brittney Wilbur won by the same score as the third pairing to give the Terriers the doubles point win. Unfortunately, Wofford was unable to complete the sweep as
Ansley Hardeman and
Liz Massie fell by a 6-2 score.
Mercer was able to tie the match after a win on court 1, but singles specialist
Emely Kahrs made quick work of her opponent with a 6-0, 6-2 win. That was followed up with a 6-1, 6-2 win by
Georgia Fischer, and Steryous also won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, to give the Terriers the fourth and deciding point. Wilbur topped off the day winning in three sets as she battled to a 10-7 tiebreaker win to send her team back to Spartanburg on a high note.
"Winning the doubles point today was so important. It's not easy playing on back to back days, but we know what our goal is and we try to accomplish that no matter the circumstances", said coach Hall. "Playing in this heat was tough and I am so proud of how the girls dug deep and left everything on the court today."
