Terriers End Season with 1-1 Draw Against Paladins

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team played their final game of the 2021 spring season on Friday afternoon, battling the Furman Paladins to a 1-1 draw. Mackenzie Guest scored in the 26th minute for her first goal of the season, with the assist going to Rachel Rasins for her second. Maria Mon recorded a season-high 12 saves including a penalty kick in double overtime.

The Paladins kicked off the first half and had some early chances including two corners and three shots, but Maria Mon and the Terrier defense was up to the task. Rachel Rasins had the first chance for Wofford with a sharp angle shot looking for a deflection, but it went straight out for a goal kick. On the ensuing attack, a ball was crossed in and headed home as Furman took the lead. Wofford came back with attack after attack and ended up with a freekick just outside the 18-yard box. Rasins fired a shot that was saved, but Mackenzie Guest followed up on the rebound and tied the game. The Terriers ended the half with two more shots, but nothing else went by the Furman goalkeeper as the teams went into the locker room knotted 1-1.

Furman began the second half with the same amount of pressure as the first, but Wofford's was able to stay strong and keep the game level. Mon had to come up with two massive saves moments later as she dove to her left twice to prevent the Paladins from taking the lead. The Terriers did there best to hold of Furman as more saves and blocked shots occurred. Katie Gilligan finally got an attempt as the ball fell to her inside the box, but she put too much power on it and it went over the net. Rasins then had her shot blocked as it was headed to overtime.

It was fast-paced to start the first overtime as Furman had a shot right off the jump that Mon handled. Mia Bookhard then had a great opportunity with her left foot, but it rolled just wide of the post and out for a goal kick. Mon came up with one more save that was more conventional for her before double overtime arrived. Both squads pushed for the winner as each team had a shot go wide. It wasn't until the 108th minute that Furman was awarded a penalty after a handball in the box by Wofford. Isabella Gutierrez stepped up, but Mon stayed as strong as a brick wall and stopped the penalty and the rebound from four yards out. The momentum from the double save gave the Terriers enough life to finish out the game to a 1-1 tie.
