Baseball Drops Series Opener 7-5 To Mercer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team was defeated 7-5 by Mercer on Thursday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Bears had a 5-2 advantage after five innings. Wofford scored once in the seventh and Mercer added a run in the top of the eighth. The Terriers scored twice in the bottom of the eighth and left the bases loaded. Mercer scored in the top of the ninth for a 7-5 lead and Wofford left two runners in scoring position when the game ended.
 
Wofford is 33-19 overall and 19-9 in the SoCon. Mercer is 35-18 on the season and 18-7 in league play. The Bears had 14 hits in the contest to ten for the Terriers.  
 
NOTABLES
  • Brennen Dorighi led the Terriers with a career-high three hits and three RBIs, including a solo home run. Nolen Hester added three hits and two runs scored.
  • Josh Vitus (3-4) started for Wofford and allowed five runs on ten hits in six innings with three strikeouts. Sam Stratton went 2.1 innings with two runs allowed on three hits and a pair of strikeouts. Dalton Rhadans threw two-thirds of an inning with one hit allowed.
  • Mercer starter Garett Delano (6-1) went 6.2 innings with three runs allowed on seven hits and three strikeouts. Taylor Lobus worked two-thirds of an inning with two runs allowed. Luke Sutko and Zach Turner each pitched to one batter. Jackson Kelley earned the save by going the final 1.1 innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With one out in the top of the first, Mercer had back-to-back singles. A double drove in both runs and with two outs an RBI single made it 3-0. Nolen Hester led off the bottom half with a single and he scored on a single by Trey Yunger with two outs for a 3-1 game.
  • In the second inning, the Bears stranded two runners in scoring position and the Terriers left one on base after a single by Brennen Dorighi.
  • The Bears led off the third inning with a single before a strikeout/caught stealing double play was turned by the Terriers. They stranded one runner on base. Wofford opened the bottom of the third with a hit by pitch but a double play and fly ball ended the inning.
  • After Mercer was retired in order in the top of the fourth, Lawson Hill led off the Wofford half with a single. With one out he was caught stealing and a fly ball send the game to the fifth inning.
  • A lead-off walk and a double were followed by a ground out to give the Bears a 4-1 lead. An RBI single extended the lead to 5-1 before a double play ended the top of the fifth. Wofford had one out in the bottom half when Brennen Dorighi hit his third home run of the season to make it a 5-2 contest.
  • The Bears led off the sixth and seventh innings with doubles but were unable to add to the lead. In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, John Dempsey doubled and he scored on a single up the middle by Brennen Dorighi to make it 5-3. A walk and fielder's choice ended the inning.
  • Mercer added a run with one out in the top of the eighth on a solo home run. Nolen Hester led off the Wofford half of the inning with a single. With one out a single by Lawson Hill drove in a run. The Terriers had runner on the corners with two outs after a walk by Trey Yunger before John Dempsey was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A walk by Brennen Dorighi allowed a run to score for a 6-5 game before a strikeout left the bases loaded.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Bears had two runners on base when a single drove in a run for a 7-5 score. A fielder's choice left three runners stranded.
  • With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Nolen Hester singled and Colin Davis was hit by a pitch. A strikeout and ground out ended the game.
 
UP NEXT
Wofford and Mercer will conclude the regular season with a doubleheader beginning on 2:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The second game will begin approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
