JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior forward
Brandon Oddy recorded his first goal of the season for the Terriers in its season opener at Jacksonville on Sunday evening, though, a three-goal first-half advantage for the Dolphins would setback the Wofford men's soccer team in dropping a 5-1 decision at Southern Oak Stadium.
Â
Oddy led the Terriers with three shots, including two on goal, as freshman
Jackson Wrobel also tallied three shots.
Meade Fowler added two shots, while
Will Pucek,
Christoffer Saietz and
Erik Nikolaisen all recorded shots on goal in the match.
Â
Both squads saw solid opportunities through the opening 45 minutes, as Wofford logged six shots, with a 5-3 shot on goal differential in JU's favor, though, registering four corners to JU's two in the first half.
Â
The Dolphins opened the scoring within the first minute of play (0:23), as the Terriers began to find early chances shortly after, seeing
Erik Nikolaisen lay a shot on goal from within the left side of the box in the 10
th minute, though, JU goalkeeper Matt Levy was in position for the save. JU continued to press on, finding a pair of shots off the mark before the Dolphins' Jose Manzo would lay a high-hanging ball inside the box that Reed Davis would manage to clean up to push the margin to 2-0 in the 19
th minute. Despite the deficit, Wofford didn't waste any time answering with a score of its own, as junior
Brandon Oddy capitalized on a well-placed corner with a successful strike inside the box in the 23
rd minute to put the Terriers on the board, 2-1.
Â
Jacksonville quickly returned the favor and went on to add its third goal of the half upon a cross from the far left wing that allowed Inti Antunez to sneak one by for a 3-1 edge within the 23
rd minute. After nearly eight minutes of both teams looking to find advantages, Wofford nearly found its second goal, as Oddy would find an opening inside the box to fire a shot that ricocheted off the left post back into play by JU defenders. The Dolphins eventually went on to add its fourth goal of the frame in the 40
th minute to push a three-goal lead, while the Terriers would close the half with a
Will Pucek shot from the close right wing that met the keeper to ultimately send the match into halftime with JU leading 4-1.
Â
About 10 minutes into the second half, JU would put away its fifth and final goal of the match on a breakaway in the 55
th minute to extend the margin to 5-1 with over 30 minutes to play, as Wofford remained persistent with several corner kick opportunities, including a shot on goal from
Christoffer Saietz in the 57
th minute.
Jackson Wrobel found a look in the 62
nd minute that would be saved, followed by a
Josh Burgess save on the other end in the 66
th minute, as the Terriers defense held its own through the match's duration. The Terriers would see a pair of shots down the stretch from
Meade Fowler that were sent high, however, JU would ultimately come away with the 5-1 victory at the end of regulation.
Â
Wofford (0-1) is back in action next Sunday, Sept. 5, for its home opener at Snyder Field against Georgia Southern at 7 p.m.
