CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team dropped its second-straight match, 2-0, to the Charlotte 49ers Tuesday night. Charlotte struck first in the 43
rd minute. The Terriers responded with a physical second half, receiving four yellow cards and a costly red card. The man advantage allowed the 49ers to secure an insurance goal in the 64
th minute, securing the victory.
The first half started quietly, with both sides playing stifling defense. The first shot of the match came in the eighth minute when Charlotte's Koby Carr missed high. The 49ers had two more chances in the 14
th minute, but they were saved and off target, respectively. The Terriers finally got off their first shot in the 19
th minute, but
Magnus Kjoller missed wide. This sparked the Wofford offense, as they fired off two shots in the 23
rd minute and another in the 24
th, but to no avail. Charlotte responded with three more of their own, but they, too, were unsuccessful. The squads traded missed shots again in the 29
th minute, and then Kjoller missed wide again in 35
th minute, this time to the left. Charlotte finally broke through with 42:11 on the clock when Axel Sigurdarson found the back of the net off the assist from Jaxson Watermann, giving the 49ers a 1-0 advantage at the half.
The second half started physically, with Charlotte committing a foul and Wofford's
Christoffer Saietz following with a yellow card in the 48
th minute. Charlotte committed another foul in the 52
nd minute, leading to a
Brandon Oddy shot that could not find the net. The physicality of the match exploded in the 56
th minute, with the Terriers drawing costly bookings.
Amin Mohammedi received a yellow card, and
Nic Parker received a red card to put the Terriers a man down. The 49ers immediately tried to capitalize, but Delasi Batse's shot was saved. The sides exchanged unsuccessful shots, but the man advantage paid off for Charlotte with 63:30 on the clock. Kameron Lacey found the back of the net with assists from Joe Brito and Preston Popp to extend Charlotte's lead to 2-0. Lacey tried for the brace in the 67
th minute, but
Joshua Old secured the save. A Charlotte foul gave the Terriers a chance, but a costly offside ended the opportunity in the 75
th minute. Wofford received yet another yellow card in the 79
th minute, but this did not deter the comeback efforts as
Meade Fowler took a shot in the 83
rd minute that missed wide. Charlotte put on two shots in the 86
th minute with neither able to connect, but Wofford would not get another chance.
Wofford (3-5-0, 1-0-0) posted nine shots while Charlotte (6-2-0, 1-0-0) put on 14. The Terriers only had one shot on goal to Charlotte's six. The 49ers held a slight advantage in corner kicks, 2-1. The teams combined for 19 fouls – nine for Wofford, 10 for Charlotte.
Joshua Old (3-4-0) totaled four saves on the night for the Terriers. Daniel Kuzemka (6-2-0) secured a clean sheet for the 49ers with only one save.
The Terriers will return to Southern Conference action Saturday, October 2 when they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to take on the East Tennessee State Buccaneers at 8:00 pm. It will be game three of Wofford's five-game road slate.
