ATHENS, Ga – The Wofford College women's soccer team was defeated 5-0 on Sunday afternoon by the University of Georgia at the Turner Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs had a 1-0 lead at halftime but scored four goals in the first ten minutes of the second half on the way to the final margin.
Nine minutes into the match Wofford's
Mia Bookhard had the first shot of the day which was blocked. Georgia had a shot at the top of the box saved by
Maria Mon at the 12:32 mark. The Bulldogs kept the ball on the offensive end of the field as they had the next seven shots over a ten-minute span. The Bulldogs had a shot saved by Mon with 21:34 on the clock. At 22:37, Georgia got on the scoreboard with a shot by Abby Boyan that hit off the left post and into the back of the net. Nine minutes later Mon knocked away a shot to the bottom right of the net by the Bulldogs.
Ashley Grant had a shot go wide at the 35-minute mark for the Terriers. Mon added a save on a break-away by the Bulldogs with three minutes to go and had one more save before the half ended. George had 24 shots, ten of which were on goal, in the opening half.
Georgia extended the lead just 1:17 into the second half on a goal by Abby Boyan into the bottom left of the net. They took a 3-0 advantage with a goal by Mollie Belisle at 47:15 into the left side of the goal. A header into the right corner by Belisle at the 51:33 mark pushed the lead to 4-0 and four minutes later a shot by Daniella Murguia found the net to make it 5-0. Wofford had a corner kick at 59:06, but the cross was cleared by the Bulldogs. With ten minutes left in the game a shot by Georgia went off the crossbar. In the final minute, the Terriers had two shots blocked before the match ended.
Overall, Wofford (2-4-0) had six shots to 41 for Georgia (5-1-0). The Bulldogs had a nine to two advantage in corner kicks.
Maria Mon (1-2-0) had 15 saves, the second-highest number in school history in a single game.
Caroline Doss played the final five minutes. Emory Wegener (5-1-0) had two saves for the Bulldogs in the shutout. It was the first meeting between the two teams since 2004.
The Terriers return to the friendly confines of Snyder Field on Thursday, September 9 when they host Appalachian State at 7:00 p.m. Wofford will also host Winthrop on Sunday, September 12 at 1:00 p.m.
