GREENVILLE, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College football team ended the season with a loss to Furman at Paladin Stadium. With the game tied at 14 in the first quarter, the Paladins scored four straight touchdowns and took a 42-21 lead into the half. Furman scored the first three touchdowns of the second half on the way to the 63-28 win.
Wofford ends the season at 3-8 and 3-5 in the Southern Conference. Furman, ranked #13 in the nation, is 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the SoCon. The Terriers were led by
Jimmy Weirick with 428 passing yards, with
Landon Parker and
Dylan Djete each having 100+ receiving games. The Paladins were led by quarterback Tyler Huff with 21-of-22 passing for 295 yards and two touchdowns. They also had five rushing touchdowns.
"We had a great start," said interim head coach
Shawn Watson. "We wanted to start fast and be explosive and we were. I was excited for the beginning of the game. We gave them some short fields with the turnovers and special teams things that we need to be better at. Furman is a good football team and they took advantage of those. I am proud of these kids and could not have asked for more out of the coaches or the players. They sold out for each other and I love the chemistry. We became a good football team out of a lot of adversity and I couldn't be prouder of these kids. I am excited for their future."
The Terriers opened the game with a 39-yard reception by
Landon Parker.
Dylan Djete and Parker added first downs to move to the 10-yard line. Parker capped the drive with a 10-yard catch in the corner of the endzone for a 7-0 lead at 12:31 in the first quarter. Furman answered with a five-play drive that covered 70 yards and ended with a two-yard touchdown reception to tie the game just two minutes later.

Jordan Davis for a 35-yard reception on third down and then hit
Dylan Djete for a 42-yard completion. A
Nathan Walker touchdown from the one-yard line gave Wofford a 14-7 lead at 7:53 in the opening quarter. The Paladins took advantage of a long kickoff return and penalty to begin their next drive near midfield. They covered 54 yard in eight plays and scored on a four-yard run by Dominic Roberto to make it a 14-14 game with 3:57 on the clock. Wofford went three-and-out and punted, taking over again near midfield. A 48-yard pass down the far sideline moved the ball to the three-yard line. Two plays later, Dominic Roberto scored a one-yard touchdown to give Furman a 21-14 lead with 1:38 left in the first quarter.
With the ball back, Wofford quarterback
Jimmy Weirick was sacked and fumbled with the ball recovered by Furman at the 21-yard line. After a first down, Ryan Miller caught a 10-yard pass for a 28-14 lead with 13:41 on the clock in the second quarter. Wofford had one first down before punting to Furman. They then had four first downs and capped the drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Harris for a 35-14 advantage at the 8:20 mark of the quarter. On the next drive by the Terriers, Weirick was hit as he threw and the ball was intercepted by the Paladins at the 28-yard line. After two first downs, a three-yard touchdown run by Tyler Huff made it 42-14 with 5:41 on the clock. Wofford had another big first down with a 31-yard catch by
Landon Parker and on the ninth play of the drive Weirick found
Devin Mathews for a 22-yard touchdown. With the score 42-21 with 1:36 left in the first half, Furman had one first down before
David Powers intercepted Tyler Huff at the 40-yard line.
Kyle Pinnix had a first down reception and a 38-yard field goal attempt was blocked with the ball returned to the 42-yard line. On the final play of the half,
Chuck Smith sacked Tyler Huff and forced a fumble that was recovered by the Paladins to end the half.
To begin the second half, Furman had three first downs and scored on a seven-yard run by Tyler Huff to extend the lead to 49-21 at 11:35 in the quarter. After Wofford went three-and-out, the Paladins had six first downs on the way to a one-yard touchdown run by Kendall Thomas to make it a 56-21 game at 4:08 in the third quarter. Dylan Djete on the near sideline, but a 41-yard field goal attempt was blocked and returned 65-yards for a touchdown. With 15 seconds left in the third quarter, Furman had a 63-21 lead. With the ball back, R.J. Khayo had a 36-yard first down catch and after another first down
Jimmy Weirick was intercepted at the two-yard line and the ball was returned to the 18-yard line. After Furman went three-and-out, Wofford drove the field in eight plays and scored on a five-yard touchdown run by
Kyle Parsons for a 63-28 score with 5:44 remaining in the game. After the Paladins went three-and-out and punted,
Landon Parker added a 37-yard catch for a first down. Wofford faced a fourth-and-15 with 2:10 left in the game but the pass was broken up and the Paladins took over on downs. They were able to run out the clock to end the game.
Wofford had 465 total yards, with 428 rushing yards. Furman had 469 total yards, with 292 of those passing yards. Wofford had 20 first downs to 23 for Furman. Wofford was 6-of-14 on third down and 0-of-1 on fourth down. Furman was 4-of-7 on third down. Wofford was called for two penalties and Furman was called for five in the game. The Paladins had a 30:14 to 29:46 time of possession advantage.

Wofford and Furman played the first football game in the state of South Carolina in 1889. Furman holds a 56-33-7 lead in the series and have won the last two meetings. The 63 points scored by Furman in the series since 1920.
The interception by
David Powers was his second of the season and the fifth of the season for the team.
Jimmy Weirick set a new single game record with 428 passing yards – just the second game with 400+ yards in school history. His 25 completions tied the school record he set twice this season.
The blocked field goals by Furman were the first by a Wofford opponent since October 22, 2016 by The Citadel.
After five straight games without an interception, Wofford was picked off twice in the game. The Terriers also lost one fumble and the three turnovers were the second-most in a game this season.
Landon Parker had his third career 100+ receiving game of the season with 139 yards. He set a new single season record at Wofford with 803 receiving yards this season, topping the record of 712 set in 1986.
Dylan Djete had his first career 100+ receiving game with 128 yards. It is the first time in school history Wofford had two 100+ receivers in a game.
Eli Purcell led the team with six tackles.
