CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team clicked inside the McAlister Field House Wednesday night to earn a straight-set victory (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) over The Citadel. With a second-straight win, the Terriers have improved to 15-11 on the season and pulled back to an even 7-7 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs fall to 10-15 with the result, 3-9 in league action.
Â
The straight-set triumph is Wofford's 11
th of the campaign, its most since posting 11 sweeps in 2017. The Terriers have earned their first win over The Citadel in Charleston since 2018, which is also the last time in which Wofford has swept the season series over the Bulldogs.
Â
A stout blocking effort helped propel the Terriers to the win, with Wofford swatting 11 blocks to The Citadel's six. Though the Bulldogs tallied eight aces, two more than Wofford's six, their hitting percentage was a rough .093. The Terriers topped that mark significantly, notching a .204 clip.
Â
Pacing that blocking effort was
Mary Emily Morgan, whose six blocks set a new career high for the sophomore.
Millie Loehr swatted five while
Sarah Barham added four.
Â
Though no Terriers recorded double-digit kills, it was because of a total team effort on offense as five different players recorded seven or more kills.
Sarah MacLean led the balanced attack with nine kills. Four Terriers –
Bella Zeman,
Sarah Barham,
Millie Loehr and
Mary Emily Morgan – each tallied seven. MacLean and Loehr were also efficient with their swings, hitting at .421 and .400 clips, respectively.
Â
Victoria Hensley contributed 32 assists to pace the offense. This is her 10
th time recording 30 or more helpers in the last 12 matches. The freshman also delivered three aces to top the squad.
Â
Abbey Richman totaled 18 digs, her 18
th consecutive match in double figures. She has led the team in all of them.
Â
The first set was tight the whole way, and The Citadel held a 12-9 lead in the middle portions. But a five-point run flipped the script and put the Terriers on top 14-12. A Sarah tag-team block by Barham and MacLean late had the Terriers ahead 23-20, and a pair of Bulldog service errors would provide a first-set victory for Wofford.
Â
Set two showed more of the same, with both sides not giving much ground to the other. The Bulldogs were up 16-12 before the Terriers found another groove, claiming three-straight points, and after a The Citadel kill, Wofford rattled off a five-point run to claim the lead.
Mary Emily Morgan was a driving force behind the run, contributing two kills and a block assist to put Wofford ahead 20-17. The Bulldogs gave an effort to battle back, but they couldn't overcome the gap as the Terriers won the set 25-22 to pull within a set of winning.
Â
Looking for a sweep, Wofford rolled to begin the third frame.
Victoria Hensley opened things with an ace, starting off a 7-1 run to begin the set.
Kaitlyn Brown would later send home an ace of her own right before a
Millie Loehr kill for a solid 12-5 lead, but five-point run by The Citadel featuring three aces brought the Bulldogs back within striking distance at 12-10. With Wofford holding a close 19-17 lead late, a five-point Terrier run widened the gap. This time,
Sarah MacLean was the key piece with three kills, as the run made the score 24-17 for Wofford match point. Showing no quit, The Citadel won the next three points in an attempt to fight back, but it was too little too late. MacLean came up clutch once more to put away the match-winning kill for a Terrier sweep.
Â
After the straight-set triumph, Wofford will get a little over a week off before returning to the court at home next weekend. The Terriers host Samford at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11 before welcoming Mercer to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium the following night. That match is the regular-season finale and Wofford's senior night.
