Baseball Edged by Marist at Fluor Field

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team was locked in a battle with the Marist Red Foxes at Fluor Field Saturday afternoon. The game quickly became a pitchers' duel, and the bullpens of both squads clamped down in the neutral site affair. Marist held on to down the Terriers, 2-1. Wofford drops to 2-4 after the loss, while Marist improves to 4-1.

Terrier starter Josh Vitus (1-1) was credited with a tough loss after throwing 3.0 innings and allowing just two runs. He fanned three. Coulson Buchanan and Dalton Rhadans were the two bullpen arms Wofford used, with neither relenting a run. Buchanan hurled 4.2 innings with eight punchouts. He did not allow a hit. Rhadans tossed 1.1 innings, allowing only a hit and a walk.

The winner was Red Fox starter Erubiel Candelario (2-0), who pitched 5.0 innings and gave up just one run.

Wofford totaled seven hits and five free passes in the contest, leaving 11 runners stranded on base. John Dempsey (2-for-4) and Nolen Hester (2-for-3) each tallied multi-hit games at the plate. Brennen Dorighi was 1-for-4 at the dish, but his lone hit drove in Wofford's only run of the game.

Marist struck first in the top of the second inning with two separate RBI doubles. The Red Foxes held an early 2-0 lead.

It wasn't long before Wofford got on the board as well, cutting the deficit in half in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Brennen Dorighi drove home the first run for the Terriers with an RBI single. Wofford trailed 2-1.

However, runs were at a premium, and both squads' bullpens were locked in. But even so, the Terriers made a last-ditch effort in the bottom of the ninth. Zeb Roos led-off the frame with a single, and Trey Yunger came in to pinch-run. David Wiley worked a walk, and another pinch runner (Brice Martinez) came in. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, giving Wofford both the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position. However, the Red Foxes brought in a new pitcher, who went to work to strike out the next two Terriers and lock down a 2-1 result in favor of Marist.

The Terriers are scheduled to return home to Russell C. King Field tomorrow afternoon for rematch of Friday night's game. First pitch against the Monmouth Hawks is slated for 1:00 p.m.
