SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With the match tied at three,
Callum Rendle came up with a win in the third set at #2 singles to clinch the victory for the Wofford College men's tennis team over the College of Charleston. The Saturday afternoon match at Reeves Tennis Center began with the Cougars taking the doubles point, but the Terriers earned four wins at singles to take the match by a 4-3 margin.
The College of Charleston won at #1 and #3 doubles, each by a 6-4 score, to claim the doubles point.
Singles play began with
Ashe Ray winning 6-2, 6-2 at the #1 position.
Mark Endler added a 6-2, 7-5 win at #3 singles and
Robert Young had a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 win at the #5 position for a 3-1 lead. The Cougars responded with three-set wins at the #4 and #6 positions to tie the match at three.
At #2 singles, Robby Krick won the first set 6-7 (7-4) in a tiebreaker.
Callum Rendle answered with a 6-1 win in the second set. In the third set, Rendle fought for a 6-4 win that clinched the match for the Terriers.
"What an incredible match!," said head coach
Rod Ray. "We lost the doubles point and fought to the end to beat a talented team. This win was about toughness. I'm proud of our resolve and character."
Wofford (4-7) begin Southern Conference play on Friday, March 4, at East Tennessee State University. The College of Charleston is 2-4 on the season.
