GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team powered by UNC Greensboro at Fleming Gym Thursday night to extend its winning streak to three games. The Terriers were led by three double-digit performers, including 24 points from
Jackie Carman, to improve to 6-1 in SoCon action, 11-10 overall. The Spartans fall to 6-13, 2-4 in conference.
Wofford's winning streak over UNCG now sits at three-straight games. The Terriers are over .500 for the first time all season, and the best-ever SoCon start extends to 6-1.
"I'm really happy and proud of our team," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "It's hard to win on the road, and we came in here with the right mindset. I think defensively, we were really good, especially in that first half. We had a stretch there in the second half where we let our guard down a little bit, but I'll give [UNCG] credit to that. I though Jackie had a really good game, but we shared the ball really well."
"[The vibes] are great. Everyone's confident," added senior guard
Jackie Carman. "Every road win is so important, and right now, we only have one loss on the road [in conference], so that builds everyone's confidence. Road wins have kind of been the sore spot for us in the past, so just to see everyone so happy and confident playing on the road is really big for us."
The Terriers shot 39.0 percent in the contest on a 23-of-59 clip, just better than the 36.8 percent mark of the Spartans. It was beyond the arc where Wofford gained its advantage, shooting 37.0 percent on 10-of-27 while UNCG only shot 14.3 percent with only two successful threes. UNCG won the glass, 43-31, but Wofford won the all-important turnover battle. The Spartans committed three times as many turnovers as the Terriers, 18 to Wofford's season-low of six.
"To win on the road, you really have to take care of the ball," added Garrity. "We had six total turnovers, which is just fantastic. We did enough on the glass. They're really talented, and they're really big. And overall, I just thought we had a great gameplan, and our players really followed it."
Jackie Carman took charge Thursday night, scoring 24 points, all of which came from three-point range. Her eight made threes are a new career-high, and they tie the record for most made three-pointers in a single game by a Terrier, which was originally set by Chloe Wanink at Auburn on Nov. 6, 2019. Six of the senior's triples came in the first half alone, which already gave Carman a season-high before her two in the second half lifted her to new heights.
"It's awesome," said Carman. "Me and Chloe are good friends. I know she set that record at Auburn, so I'm definitely going to text her tonight about that."
"I'm really happy for Jackie," said Garrity of Carman's record performance. "She was feeling good, and her teammates got her the ball. All of those were really good shots. She's put a lot of work into that craft of hers. I'm just super happy for her."
Two other Terriers tallied double figures, with
Alexis Tomlin dropping 13 points and
Helen Matthews scoring 10. Tomlin was 5-of-8 from the field, adding three free throws and three boards. Matthews lead the team with eight rebounds to tie her career-high while also dishing four assists.
Reagan Rapert added eight points and three boards. She led the team with six assists to tie her career-high for a third-straight contest.
Lilly Hatton tallied four points and four rebounds.
Annabelle Schultz was good for three points and an assist.
Sydnee Richetto secured one point to round out the scoring.
Wofford won the opening tip, and
Jackie Carman immediately set the tone with a triple just 16 seconds into the game. After UNCG took the lead 4-3, Carman swished another trey to put Wofford back in front for good. The Spartans kept things close at first, though, as the Terriers led by just two with 4:06 left. A seven-point run gave Wofford some cushion, and though UNCG got to within four again, an
Annabelle Schultz triple in the final minute extended the Terrier lead to 18-11 after the first quarter.
The Spartans scored first in the second frame, but
Jackie Carman delivered from distance twice in a row to extend the Terrier lead to 11. She would go back-to-back from downtown again to put Wofford up by 17 with 3:29 remaining before halftime, as the Terriers began to pull away. An
Alexis Tomlin bucket in the closing seconds lifted the Wofford lead to 19 points, 38-19, entering the break.
The Spartans showed some fight to begin the last half, going on a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 14. However, it was
Jackie Carman again with back-to-back threes to bring Wofford out to a 20-point lead with 5:19 to go. The Spartans began climbing back, though, cutting the lead to 15 at the conclusion of the quarter.
The squads were trading blows to begin the final quarter, as
Reagan Rapert's layup was matched, and so was
Helen Matthews' jumper. But any hope of a Spartan comeback was nixed by fouls and successful Terrier trips to the charity stripe. Wofford's eight-point run saw the first six points come from the free throw line, and
Alexis Tomlin punctuated it with a layup. UNCG would secure some buckets, but the game had long been decided. The Terriers triumphed, 63-45.
After completing the first half of the conference slate, Wofford begins its back half with the second leg of the Western Carolina series on Saturday, Feb. 5. It will be a 2:00 p.m. tipoff in Cullowhee, N.C. against the Catamounts. The Terriers then get a week of rest before welcoming the rival Furman Paladins to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 12.
