CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 7-0 by the University of North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels, currently ranked #23 in the nation, won a hard-fought doubles point and then swept the singles matches.
In doubles, the Tar Heels pairing of Casey Kania and Logan Zapp, ranked #28 in the nation, won at the #2 position. The Terriers pair of
Will Fullett and
Mark Endler responded with a 6-3 win at the #3 position to even the match. North Carolina's Mac Kiger and Brian Cernoch, ranked #26 in the nation, earned a 6-4 win over
Bryce Keim and
Callum Rendle at the #1 position to take the doubles point.
Singles matches began with the Tar Heels winning at #3, #4 and #1 singles to clinch the match. North Carolina added a win at #6 singles. At #5 singles,
Robert Young lost the first set 7-6 in a 10-8 tiebreaker and dropped the second set.
Callum Rendle played Brian Cernoch, ranked #87 in the nation, at #2 singles and won the second set 7-6 in a 7-5 tiebreaker. Cernoch won the third set 10-5 to conclude the match.
The Tar Heels improve to 3-1 on the season. Wofford (0-7) finally returns home on Saturday, February 12, against Emmanuel at noon, ending a six-match road swing.
