GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College women's tennis team was defeated 7-0 by Furman on Thursday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center. The Paladins, ranked 24
th in the nation, took the doubles point and swept the singles matches.
In doubles, the Paladins won at the #1 and #3 positions by scored of 6-0 and 6-1 respectively to earn the point. At #2 doubles, the pairing of
Georgia Fischer and
Brianna Wilbur earned a 6-4 victory.
Singles action began with Julia Adams, ranked #53 in the nation, earning a point for the Paladins at the #1 position in straight sets. Furman added wins at #2 and #4 singles to clinch the match. The Paladins had straight set wins at #6 and #5 singles as well. At #3 singles,
Georgia Fischer took the first set to a tiebreaker before falling 7-6, 6-2.
The winner of the match is awarded the yearly Pinson Cup by Bobby and Dixie Pinson, beloved friends of both the Furman and Wofford programs. The couple has given a trophy, which stays with the winning school until the winner of the next season's match is determined, and a generous donation in honor of this rivalry. The Paladins have been awarded the trophy each year since its inception in 2005.
Wofford (6-8, 0-3) returns home on Saturday, April 2, as they host UNC Greensboro. Furman is 12-5 overall and 1-0 in league play.
