SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Sunday afternoon, the Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by Elon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Phoenix won the doubles point and proceeded to win four of the six singles matches.
In doubles play, Elon took the #1 position 6-1 and then clinched the point with a 6-3 win at the #2 position. The third match was unfinished with the Phoenix leading 4-3.
The Terriers began singles play with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the #4 position by
Alex Horn. Elon answered with a 6-1, 7-5 win at the # 2 position and then added a 7-6, 6-3 win at the #6 position. At #1 singles, the Phoenix earned a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win to clinch the match. The #5 singles match was tied 1-1 and the third set tiebreaker was won 10-7 by
Robert Young for the Terriers. At #2 singles,
Callum Rendle won the first set 6-4 and dropped the second 6-2. The third set was played to conclusion and was won 6-2 by the Phoenix to close the contest with a 5-2 victory.
Wofford (4-9, 0-1) will return to Southern Conference play next Sunday at Mercer for a 1:00 p.m. match. Elon is 6-4 on the season and have not begun CAA play.
