Women’s Tennis Secures 5-2 Road Win At Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – On Monday afternoon, Wofford College women's tennis team won the final two singles matches to take a 5-2 win over Western Carolina at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The Terriers won the doubles point and then won four of the six singles matches for the SoCon road victory.
 
The Catamounts took an early lead in doubles with a win at the #3 position. Liz Massie and Lilie Steryous won 6-2 at the #1 position. With the #2 doubles match tied at 6-6, Georgia Fischer and Lily Woods won the tiebreaker 7-5 to clinch the doubles point for the Terriers.
 
In singles play, Western Carolina got on the board with a win at the #5 position. The Terriers took the next match as Liz Massie won 6-2, 6-2 at the #3 position. The Catamounts then added a win at the #1 position, which was followed by a win by Georgia Fischer at the #4 position by a 7-5, 6-1 score for the Terriers.
 
With the Terriers holding a 3-2 overall lead, two singles matches remained to decide the outcome. Lilie Steryous won the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker at the #2 position and then with the second set tied at 4-4, she won the next two games for a 6-4 win which clinched the match. At #6 singles, Breda Brennan dropped the first set and came back to win the second and third sets at 6-4 each to make it a 5-2 win for the Terriers.
 
"I am so proud of the way we bounced back from yesterday's loss," said head coach Krissy Hall. "We played the pressure points well today, had great energy, and competed with so much heart at every position. This was a great team win!!"
 
Wofford (8-9, 2-4) hosts Mercer on Friday, April 15, in the final regular season match of the season. Western Carolina is 11-9 overall and 1-5 in league play.
