SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the final match of the regular season, the Wofford College women's tennis team defeated Mercer 6-1 at Reeves Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. The Terriers won the doubles point and then took five of the six singles matches to earn the senior day victory.
Wofford started quick in doubles as
Lily Woods and
Georgia Fischer took the #2 position by a 6-0 score. At #1 doubles,
Liz Massie and Lilies Steryous were up 4-1 before finally closing the match with a 6-3 win which secured the point for the Terriers. At the #3 position,
Ansley Hardeman and
Emma Sorensen were up 3-2 before the Bears won the next two games for a 4-3 lead. The Terriers answered with two straight games to regain the lead at 5-4, but the match was tied at 5-5 and then 6-6 to go to a tiebreaker. Wofford took the tiebreaker 7-5 to complete the sweep of the doubles matches.
In singles play, at the end of the first set the matches were tied at three for each team. Brennan won 6-4, 6-2 at #6 singles and
Emely Kahrs took #5 singles by a 7-5, 6-2 margin to give the Terriers a 3-0 lead in the match. At #3 singles,
Liz Massie won the first set 6-2 and then trailed in the second set 5-4. She won the next two games for a 6-5 lead and broke serve to win 7-5, which clinched the match for the Terriers.
The remaining three matches were tied at 1-1 after the first two games. At #1 singles,
Lily Woods lost the first set 7-5 but bounced back with a 6-4 win and then took the third set tiebreaker 11-9 to claim the point.
Lilie Steryous played #2 singles and was defeated 4-6, 6-2, 4-6 to give Mercer the point. In the final match to conclude,
Georgia Fischer lost the first set 6-3, but won the second and third sets 6-2 for the victory.
Following the match, the team honored the three seniors in the class of 2022 -
Ansley Hardeman,
Liz Massie, and
Lilie Steryous.
"We really came together today and were able to send our seniors off with a great home win," said head coach
Krissy Hall. "We have finished the season strong which should give us momentum heading into the conference tournament."
Wofford ends the regular season at 9-9 and 3-4 in the Southern Conference, while Mercer is 6-15 overall and 0-7 in the league. The Terriers will begin play in the Southern Conference Championship on Thursday, April 21, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They are slated to be the #5 seed and will play the #4 seed Chattanooga at 8:30 a.m.
