BLACKSBURG, Va. – On Saturday, the Wofford College football team faced Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium and was defeated 27-7. The Hokies took a 20-0 lead into the half and both teams scored in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
Wofford begins the season 0-3, while Virginia Tech of the ACC moves to 2-1. The Terriers were led by
Landon Parker with five catches for 98 yards, while
Jimmy Weirick was 14-of-20 passing for 161 yards. The Hokies were led by Grant Wells, who was 26-of-35 passing for 314 yards and two touchdowns.
"The first things that I am happy about as a head coach is when you come up into these environments they are not easy places to play," said Wofford head coach
Josh Conklin. "We talked about playing with great focus and great effort for four quarters and we did that. It was great to see use get a touchdown there in the fourth quarter after struggling for a few quarters. We created some explosive plays. The defense battled their tails off all game long which was encouraging to see. The biggest thing that I saw was right before we scored the touchdown we had no one on the sideline – everyone was out with the offense and encouraging those guys. That tells me what this program is about."
The Hokies had the ball first and gained four first downs before being faced with a fourth-and-one from the 22-yard line.
Eli Purcell stopped the runner for a one-yard loss and the Terriers took over on downs with 9:45 on the clock in the first quarter. Wofford had one passing first down before punting. With the ball back, the Hokies had three first downs before a sack by
Micheal Mason. The 46-yard field goal attempt was good and Virginia Tech led 3-0 with 3:46 left in the first quarter. After the Terriers went three-and-out and punted, the Hokies had three first downs before settling for a 41-yard field goal and a 6-0 lead at 14:521in the second quarter.
Wofford had a first down pass on the ensuing drive and faced fourth-and-one. After a timeout, the Terriers punted and the Hokies took over at the 18-yard line. They drove the field in twelve plays and scored on a one-yard run for a 13-0 lead at the 5:48 mark of the second quarter. Wofford had a first down by penalty, but the drive stalled with back-to-back sacks and the Terriers punted. The Hokies added an 11-yard touchdown pass with 25 seconds remaining in the half to take a 20-0 lead. Wofford had a first down run by

To open the second half, the Terriers went three-and-out and punted. The Hokies gained one first down before punting back to Wofford.
Jimmy Weirick ran for a first down, but was sacked on third down to force a punt. After the Hokies gained one first down and punted, the Terriers began their next drive at the six-yard line. They had two first downs and reached midfield, but had to punt. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Hokies picked up three first downs and scored on a 27-yard touchdown pass for a 27-0 advantage with 12:57 remaining.

Landon Parker for a first down and then hit him for a 47-yard completion to move into the redzone. Another first down pass to Parker moved the ball to the three-yard line. A run by
Nathan Walker put the Terriers on the board with 9:34 left in the game to make it a 27-7 game. After the Hokies went three-and-out and punted, Weirick and Parker connected for a 24-yard first down completion before punting. Virginia Tech got the ball back with 5:39 remaining and was able to run out the clock.
Wofford had 199 total yards, with 161 rushing yards. Virginia Tech had 475 total yards, with 342 of those passing yards. Virginia Tech had a 29 to 12 advantage in first downs. Wofford was 3-of-11 on third down. Virginia Tech was 7-of-13 on third down and 0-of-1 on fourth down. Wofford was called for three penalties to five for Virginia Tech. The Hokies had a 34:58 to 25:02 time of possession advantage.
