Volleyball Wins First-Ever Terrier Invite with Win over PC

Four-set triumph of Blue Hose extends winning streak to seven

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team battled the Presbyterian Blue Hose through four sets of action inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium Saturday afternoon, but it was the Terriers who prevailed (25-22, 25-21, 12-25, 25-16) to claim the Terrier Invite crown. Wofford's record improves to 8-4 with the result.

The Terriers have extended their winning streak to seven games. After winning last weekend's CofC Classic, this Terrier Invite crown marks Wofford's second non-conference tournament win of the season. This is the first time the Terriers have won two non-conference tournaments in a campaign since 2017, in which Wofford claimed the Runnin' Bulldogs Invitational and the Georgia State Invitational.

Wofford dominated the net in the match, swatting eight blocks to just three for PC. The Terriers also out-hit the Blue Hose with a .304 clip as opposed to a .264 mark.

Bella Zeman continued her hot streak offensively, notching 16 kills to tie for the team lead with Millie Loehr. Zeman swung at an impressive .353 clip with just four errors alongside her 16 kills on 34 swings. Sarah Barham also tallied a stout .455 percentage with her 11 kills and lone error on 22 attempts. But it was Loehr who was the most efficient, tallying a whopping career-high .750 percentage with just one error on 20 swings. In addition, her 16 kills match her career best.

Barham remained a force at the net, recording four blocks to top the team. Abbey Richman paced the squad in both aces (two) and digs (12). Victoria Hensley dished a team-leading 27 assists, and with eight digs was just shy of a double-double.

Presbyterian won the first point of the match, but Wofford rallied to hold a 7-4 lead after Sarah Barham sent home an ace. The Blue Hose kept fighting, staying right on Wofford's heels until a four-point run put them in front 21-20. The Terriers fought back, responding with three-straight points to jump back ahead. Though Presbyterian pulled back to within one, Millie Loehr provided set point with her kill, and Abbey Richman delivered an ace to seal the deal.

The Blue Hose claimed the first point again in set two, but once again, the Terriers responded and took the lead. But the sides were trading blows most of the way through the set, which saw nine ties and five lead changes. Presbyterian led 17-16 before Sarah MacLean tied the score. A Richman ace put Wofford in front, and the Terriers eventually pulled out to a 23-21 advantage. Bella Zeman brought up set point with her kill, and an attack error provided the set two Wofford win.

Wofford claimed the first point this time in set three, but Presbyterian played its part in the role reversal to fight back for the lead. Two separate five-point runs helped the Blue Hose race to a 14-4 advantage. Wofford kept battling but could not find a rhythm in the set, which Presbyterian rolled in to a 25-12 win to force a fourth frame.

Wofford led 9-5 before Presbyterian pulled to within on in set four. The Terriers claimed six of the next seven points for some breathing room at 15-9, but the Blue Hose kept fighting to pull to 19-15. Emory Wyatt delivered a kill for the 20th point of the set, sparking a five-point run to set up match point. Though the run ended on a service error, Millie Loehr stepped up to deliver the match-winning kill and claim the Terrier Invite championship for the Terriers.

Wofford has now concluded non-conference play and begins Southern Conference action next week. The Terriers take a Tennessee trip, stopping first in Johnson City for a match-up with ETSU on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m. Then Wofford faces Chattanooga the following day at 4:00 p.m.

The Terrier Invite
With a perfect 3-0 run through the tournament field, Wofford claimed the crown for the first-ever Terrier Invite. The All-Tournament Team features seven total players, with Georgia State and SC State each represented by one player, Presbyterian tallying two representatives and Wofford holding the most with three.

Bella Zeman was named the MVP of the Terrier Invite as she amassed 39 kills on a .395 percentage over the Terriers' three matches. Joining her for Wofford are Sarah Barham and Millie Loehr. Barham swung at a stellar .568 clip with 22 kills while adding six blocks and two aces. She has been named to the all-tournament team for each of Wofford's four non-conference tournaments this season. Loehr tallied 27 kills on an impressive .512 percentage with four blocks added in.
