Football Struggles In Loss At ETSU

Box Score JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Wofford College football team was defeated 41-10 by East Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon at Greene Stadium. The Bucs intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown on the fourth play of the game and never looked back as they built a 27-0 lead at the half. After going up 34-0, the Terriers scored the next ten points before a final touchdown by ETSU.
 
Wofford opens the season at 0-7 and 0-4 in the Southern Conference, while East Tennessee State is 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league play. The Terriers were led by Ryan Ingram with 14 carries for 42 yards and Pauly Seeley was 15-of-32 passing with a touchdown to Dylan Djete. The Bucs were led by Bryson Irby with 17 carries for 137 yards and a touchdown, while Will Huzzie had seven catches for 93 yards and a touchdown.
 
"We had to play from behind after that first drive which is hard to do," said head coach Shawn Watson. "We knew we had to stop ETSU on offense, but they ended up doing a great job of running the ball and keeping possession. We have a lot to continue to fix. Getting the points in the second half gave us some confidence. Everyone is disappointed but we have to keep working."
 
The Terriers had the ball first and gained one first down before an interception by Sheldon Arnold II was returned 39-yards for a touchdown at 13:35 on the clock. On the ensuing drive, Wofford went three-and-out and punted. The Bucs had three first downs on their first offensive drive and added a 24-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead with 8:14 remaining in the first quarter. Wofford had one first down before a holding penalty backed them up and forced a punt. On the next drive by ETSU, they converted a third-and-22 but then had to punt.
 
Wofford went three-and-out and punted with 31 seconds left in the opening quarter. The Bucs had a first down, then converted a fourth-and-one. After another first down, they had a 19-yard receiving touchdown overturned by replay. They picked up another first down before a six-yard run for a 17-0 lead at 10:09 in the second quarter. Wofford again went three-and-out and punted, but the kick was blocked and the Bucs took over at the 30-yard line. In just five plays, they scored on an eight-yard touchdown pass to take a 24-0 lead with 5:49 left in the first half. After the touchdown, Wofford began at their seven-yard line and had two offensive penalties that forced the Terriers three-and-out. The Bucs had a 37-yard pass play to convert a third down, but had to settle for a 37-yard field goal with 53 seconds left on the clock to take a 27-0 lead. Wofford ran the ball twice to end the first half.
 
 On the opening drive of the second half, the Bucs had a 56-yard touchdown run by Bryson Irby to push the lead to 34-0 at 12:15 in the third quarter. Wofford began their next drive at the Bucs' 45-yard line after a 39-yard kickoff return by Alec Holt. The Terriers had a fourth-and-four, but the pass was broken up and the Bucs took over. A 38-yard field goal was wide left after the Bucs gained a pair of first downs. With the ball back, Wofford had a first down on a pass interference call and then had first down passes to Tyler Parker and Dylan Djete. The Terriers got on the board with 57 seconds left in the third quarter with a 47-yard field goal by Bridger Jones to make it a 34-3 game. The Bucs had one first down before punting back to Wofford, who went on a 12-play drive that included four first downs and was capped by a 14-yard pass from Pauly Seeley to Dylan Djete. The score was 34-10 with 6:16 remaining in the game. A 27-yard reception moved the Bucs across midfield on their next drive and then scored on a 24-yard run to make it a 41-10 score with 1:19 left on the clock. Wofford was driving when the game ended.
 
Wofford had a 177 total yards, with 114 passing yards. ETSU had 422 total yards, with 236 of those rushing yards. ETSU had 20 first downs to 12 for the Terriers. Wofford was 5-of-12 on third down and 0-of-1 on fourth down. ETSU was 7-of-13 on third down and 1-of-1 on fourth down. Both teams were called for eight penalties. The Bucs had a 34:35 to 25:20 time of possession advantage.
 
Wofford vs. East Tennessee State Post-Game Notes
This was the 31st meeting between the two teams, dating back to 1957. Wofford leads the series at 16-15, winning eight of the last ten games.
 
The 47-yard field goal by Bridger Jones tied his career-long which was previously set this season against Chattanooga.
 
Dylan Djete scored his second career touchdown in the fourth quarter, which also marked the first touchdown pass thrown by Pauly Seeley.
 
On defense, Eli Purcell led the Terriers with seven tackles and Chuck Smith had one sack.           
 
Wofford will remain on the road next week with a trip on October 21 to Mercer with a 4:00 p.m. kick-off.
