SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Monday, the Southern Conference Football Players of the Week presented by Southern Recognition were awarded for all games played so far this season. Wofford punter
Cillian Bonner was named the Special Teams Player of the Week, The Citadel running back Gavin Garcia was named the Offensive Player of the Week, and Tennessee Tech cornerback Omari Philyaw was named the Defensive Player of the Week. The awards are selected by the league office.
Bonner, a sophomore from Lettermacaward, Ireland, punted six times for 283 yards with a 47.2 average. In the battle of field position in the win against Gardner-Webb, three punts were downed inside the 20, including two at the one-yard line and one at the two-yard line - all three ensuing drives by Gardner-Webb ended in punts. He had a career-long punt of 56 yards in the third quarter.
This is the first player of the week honor for Bonner. It is the second special teams player of the week for the Terriers this year, with
Davis Penn receiving the award last week.
Wofford will be on the road for the next two games at Kent State and at Chattanooga before returning home on September 26 to host SoCon newcomer Tennessee Tech. Tickets are available by visiting
