Volleyball Drops Four-Set Match to Chattanooga

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team claimed set one Friday night inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, but the Chattanooga Mocs won the next three sets to claim the match (25-10, 17-25, 20-15, 12-25). The Terriers are now 15-5 (6-3 SoCon), and the Mocs are 16-8 (4-5 SoCon).

Wofford tallied more kills, 57-42, and more assists, 52-37, but Chattanooga recorded more aces, 9-3. The Mocs also added five blocks while holding the Terriers without any. But Wofford out-dug Chattanooga, 87-79.

Mary Emily Morgan led the Wofford attack with 12 kills, and Millie Loehr joined her in double figures with 10. Loehr was the most efficient Terrier, hitting .381 with only two errors on 21 swings. Six Terriers owned five or more kills, with Addison Foote and Sarah MacLean each owning nine just shy of double-digits. Bri Mahoney tallied eight kills as well.

The three Wofford aces were spread evenly among Foote, Taylor Pecht and Emily Hodsdon, each with one. Pecht dished 26 assists to top the team, and Hodsdon added 18 of her own.

Three Terriers recorded double-doubles in the contest. Morgan added 16 digs for her fourth of the season and seventh career. Hodsdon notched her 27th career double-double and fifth of the campaign by adding 14 digs to her assists, and Pecht tallied 10 digs for her fourth double-double.

But Abbey Richman once again paced the squad with her 18 digs, stretching her double-digit streak to 41 consecutive matches. Loehr recorded a career-high seven digs.

Set one was tight early before Wofford embarked on a 6-1 run, sparked by a Sarah Barham kill. Sarah MacLean punctuated the run with Wofford ahead 14-8, and the Terriers rode that momentum from there. A Moc kill would cut their deficit to 16-10, but it was the last point Chattanooga earned in the set. Millie Loehr tallied the next kill, kicking off a nine-point run to end the set for the Terriers. Mary Emily Morgan recorded three of the final four points in the run, including the clincher, for a 25-10 set one win.

But Chattanooga responded in a big way early in set two, using an eight-point run to take a 10-4 lead. Wofford pushed back but could not overcome the early hole, ultimately falling 25-17 as the Mocs evened the match.

The third set was a tight, back-and-forth battle featuring eight ties and three lead changes. Sarah Barham notched a kill to tie the set 11-11. The Mocs won three-straight points before Wofford responded in kind, including an Emily Hodsdon ace. Another three-point run by the Terriers shortly thereafter saw Wofford claim a one-point lead, 19-18, thanks to kills from Sarah MacLean and Addison Foote. But the Mocs recovered, tallying seven of the final eight points to win the set 25-20.

Wofford kept the fourth frame close early, but Chattanooga rode its momentum to a 9-2 run in the middle goings of the set to a 23-9 lead. Wofford used a three-point run to stay alive thanks to kills from Millie Loehr and Addison Foote, making the score 23-12, but it was too late as Chattanooga then won the next two points and the match.

The Terriers will look to bounce back tomorrow night with another home match. Wofford welcomes Mercer to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for a 6:00 p.m. tilt.
